What are my options for long-term visas in Thailand if I don't have a job or degree?

I am guessing that this has been a lot on here but I have only just joined. I am looking at moving to Thailand in May/June. I want to stay there permanently. I am looking for visas but having a bit of difficulty. I do not have a degree so a visa B is out. I also have some savings, but nowhere near enough to apply as a wealthy person. I would need a working visa, but also do not have a job lined up yet as I don't want to start working immediately. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster is seeking advice on moving to Thailand permanently without a degree or a job, expressing concerns about visa options and financial stability. Comments emphasize that obtaining a work visa requires a job offer, and suggest exploring alternatives like a tourist visa or a DTV visa for digital nomads. Several comments highlight challenges for foreigners seeking employment in Thailand, particularly without a degree, and advised on the importance of having adequate savings. The discussion also mentions options like marrying a Thai citizen to obtain residency.

Yes, there is a special visa for foreigners who don’t have enough money and who don’t have a job but want a working permit it’s called a tourist visa, good for 60 days and then extension for 30 and then you do Visa run

From all the comments and what you answered, I see only two ways:

1. You find an online job before moving. I was lucky enough to have my home office here before I retired. But you need to already know something that supports online, like me being a senior software developer. Just starting with YouTube will not do it, bc that take 5-10 years time.

2. Get married (I suppose you’re not 50+) to a Thai. You’ll need to show

monthly income or a mix of both.

There’s enough ladies looking for a supporter, so this part is easy; but beware, you find the wrong one and get divorced quickly and your visa is gone too.

The 400k should be easy, but you didn’t say how much you have saved.

Tom you just don't walk into Thailand and start working. Much more homework is need on your part my friend. Get onto Thai immigration web site and check just what you can do, I gather you are under 50 years of age.

Not much for under 50 in Thailand unless you have degree in teaching.

Thai immigration website? Good luck with that, he will find what he thinks they have said may well be completely different when he is standing in front of the immigration officer...

Correction it's not $500,000 baht but to be accurate it's $400,000 baht

As an old guy my advice is as it stands you have no hope, if you are really desperate you may try to get ESL teaching qualifications and get some Micky mouse school to sponsor you, but at the end of the day unless you crack it as a YouTuber or something like that(and there is already a million of them), it will be hard for you to live and work here. Thailands immigration rules are strict and while the government is tinkling around the edges with longer stay visa's they are also cracking down on foreigners abusing their systems.

I have full time online work but do not have the savings, I net over 3000/month, is there a visa possible for me to stay long term?

@Michael ******
Get an Ed visa best way or just hop/spend bit time neighbouring countries between visas

Two free months when you get here

You can't live in Thailand all year and not pay them a boat load of cash. You can split your time between Thailand, Malaysia, Korea, and Philippines and not have to cough up too much cash and have a warm and sweet girlfriend in each one to take care of your laundry, cooking, and entertainment
Will ******
You dont have a job yet as you dont want to work immediately and you have limited savings.

But you want to live here permanently.

The reality is it's really unlikely to just roll up in Thailand, find a job when you want and be given a work permit.

Thailand is now getting expensive, if you want to have a certain standard of living.

Sorry to say this but you may need a reality check.

I am not disclosing my financial situation on social media. Not enough to go for a wealthy person visa but enough in bank for financial checks and to live for a few years. I don't intend on just 'chilling' when I get here. I need to sort out medical things, find a place to live, general life admin. Opening bank account etc.
Will ******
@Thomas *****
opening a bank account is not easy. Best pay an agent.

Guessing you have 100-200k in savings. It's really easy to go through savings and not easy to find work. Alot of people are working illegally, either ok the islands or in the north of Thailand. You could work as a digital nomad and there is a visa for that. You cd set up a business here with a Thai partner perhaps, but huge risks. Or do what most of us do, get married with a Thai and that opens up doors (as well as huge risks)

This is ridiculous. He didn’t ask for your advice on this topic. Why so brutal?! Just keep scrolling if you only have negative advice.

I'm not usually being critical but no regrets posting the above in this case. For one he's in Dreamland, two he's time wasting this forum.

If he wants to expand on the original post, fine.

How much has he saved? After what period of chilling here does he want this job to land on his lap?

@Will *****
You are the one time wasting! Thats what this forum is for. Just move on and stop criticizing people.

Lots of westerners in Thailand without Uni degrees hanging around looking for work. They using end up living very cheaply and then getting deported . You should have about 5000 -10 000 GBP in your bank account to make sure that you don't end up on the streets
Jason ******
Not sure about visas,don't have enough savings 🫣🤔have you really thought this through and if it will work .maybe stay for a while and see if you still feel like living here first . 🙏🏽
Bob **********
There is not a lot of job opportunities here for foreigners and the pay is very low good luck

Have 500,000 baht and go for a DTV 5 year visa.

It allows you to remote work for an abroad company/role.

This will allow you to delay your work start and you can apply for abroad jobs as and when you want.

any advice on finding online work? I’ve tried while living in Spain and it just seemed impossible. Moving to Thailand as well but for freelance work as this is what I usually do but I would like the option to find work online just zero luck with lots of time looking and applying

The best advice. Plus your 500,000 baht can be left in your personal home country bank account.
Brandon ************
You cannot get a work visa without already having a job, because you need documents from your employer in order to apply for the visa.

You can come as a tourist and look for a job but you're not going to be able to stay long like that.

DTV is an option but it's a waste of money if you'll need to be on a work visa because the DTV will likely be voided by switching to work visa.

@Brandon ***********
what about a long term non working visa and then apply for the working visa after arriving
Brandon ************
@Thomas *****
unless you're over 50, the only long term options you will have are education and DTV.
