Is it safe for US passport holders to enter Thailand repeatedly on tourist visas via Mae Sai?

Hello, finishing up a single entry tourist visa next month 60+30. Been to Laos 2x in a row for this visa. Is it “safe” to go a third time in a row to Vientiane? Can I go to Mae Sai and do an in/out for 30 days? (US passport and I understand land crossing 2x year).

Don’t have my papers in order for my ED visa. So looking for advice and alternatives. Thanks. Looking for recent experiences and current advice.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat with a single-entry tourist visa is seeking advice on whether it's safe to cross into Laos (Vientiane) for a third time consecutively and if entering Thailand through Mae Sai for a 30-day visa exemption would be viable. Responses indicate that it is possible to visit Mae Sai, with some noting their experiences of acquiring multiple tourist visas before receiving a red stamp. The risk appears to be somewhat random but generally manageable for those awaiting necessary documentation for an education visa (ED visa). It is emphasized that once red-stamped, options for re-entry may become limited.

And in case you were wondering what those stamps look like, here are some examples

To answer your second question you need to be out of Thailand to apply for a tourist visa.

This is always good to know, they always red stamp the embassy seal and I always get worried for a second lol.

My last tourist visa turned out to be a stamp because "they ran out of stickers."

Okay, on Dec 31st 2016 they went back to 30 day visa exempt entries at land border crossings BUT at that time they also put a limit of TWO 30 day visa exempt entries by land in a year.

In Vientiane you're usually able to get 3 or 4 single entry tourist visas before they'll red stamp you.

As long as you don't have the red stamp you are safe going there because if they're going to put the warning stamp in your passport they give you one last tourist visa with the stamp on it.

I'd say IF all you're doing is waiting for a school to get you the paperwork so you can go to a thai consulate and get an ED visa just border-bounce at Mae Sai - Tachiliek and get a 30 day visa exempt entry. If for some reason the paperwork for the ED visa didn't come you could still extend that entry by 30 days at the immigration office for 1900 baht

I guess it's definitely less than before (I haven't seen close to 10 anymore) but 5+ seems doable too IF you're lucky. There's a bunch of strategies but they're all sort of a crap shoot.

I think they just look thru your passport and it comes down to their mood at that particular second. I have had people get red stamped on their third tourist visa in a row from VIentiane and I've had people who had a LOT of them (not all in a row back-2-back) get issued them without a stamp.

It's a crap shoot, BUT you'll definitely get one final tourist visa with that red stamp on it. ;)

There still is no set rule because I had more than that last week and I can't find any red stamp. It must be fairly random as I was far from the one with the most too.

It is safe till the consulate put a red stamp next to your visa. Than next time you have to switch consulates.

You can go to Mae Sai, no problem. That's the easiest if you expect you'll have papers for an Ed visa within the next 60 days.

That sign is historical, there was a period maybe 2015-2017 when they did stop border runs at that border and that is when the sign dates from.

I crossed at Mae Sai earlier this week and received 30 days. Easy. They ask if you want to go shopping and return to Thailand later that day. Said yes and paid the $10 USD (or 500 baht). Enjoyed a coffee, then walked back over. There is a big sign as you depart Thailand that says 'No Border Runs' and lists monetary requirements, etc. But the agent on the way back in didn't ask anything, just stamped me and waved me on. First land crossing there.

Yes it could be a full time job keeping up with the changes for sure, but that is how it is this week :)

ahhhh wow ok! Didn’t know that changed 🙂 Thank you for the updated info!

Jason that changed last year. All land visa exempts are 30 days now, but they are limited to 2 per calendar year. I did two of them (Irish passport- non-G7) in 2017 and got 30 days each time (and extended both, so 60 days + 60 days total).

You will only get 15 days if you go to Mae Sai or cross any border via land. You need to fly out / back to get 30 days (which can be extended for another 30, for a total of 60 days).

Thank you very much. I wish I could award you the Facebook equivalent of Reddit Gold.

That was the rule from I think 2015 or so until Jan 2017. They started allowing visa exempt border bounces again then, same time they brought in the "only 2 per year" rule. I did two there last year, and then went onto an Ed visa, so similar to your situation.

Heard rumors of being turned back without exiting if not in possession of a multi entry visa. Wanted to hear this. Thanks.
