Is it safe to rely on multiple 30-day visa-free entries in Thailand, or should I consider getting a multiple-entry tourist visa?

ORIGINAL POSTER
I had five air entries into Thailand from May 1 to July 31. Every time I got a 30 day stamp on arrival. On my last entry, the passport control officer took a little too long scrutinizing my passport. I started strongly leaning towards getting a multiple entry six month tourist visa. But, on my way out of Thailand to spend a month back in the USA, I spoke to two different immigration officers at BKK and asked them if it would be best to get a visa for my next arrival at the end of August. Both were emphatic that as long as my entries are via air, and I stay less than 30 days per entry, I don't need to worry. Wondering if anyone else has had any experience with having a bunch of visa-free entries in a relatively short period of time and if there's ever been any problems. I might have just spoken to two incredibly lenient officials on my way out.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster (O/P) shares their experience of making five air entries into Thailand within a few months, each receiving a 30-day stamp. They express concern after a passport control officer scrutinized their passport and consider applying for a multiple-entry six-month tourist visa. Two immigration officers advised them that as long as they enter by air and stay under 30 days, they shouldn't worry. However, comments from others caution that repeated entries could raise flags with immigration and suggest that a visa might be a safer option in the long run. Several commenters share their own experiences and insights regarding visa limits and the potential risks related to visa-exempt entries.

and I think on that note we are done, and the O/P knows the risks they run bouncing in and out on 30 day visa exempt entries over and over. Even though it is obvious from their entry exit history they are not living here on back-2-back visa exempt entries.

Good luck to the O/P

Sorry for the bad info I posted earlier, thanx again Robert for catching it (y)

I had this happen on the way out of Thailand and the immigration officer told me I would be best getting a visa before my next visit. I did that and next time I came to Thailand, the immigration officer asked why I got a visa when I was only staying a week.

Entry by land changed 31 Dec 2016

Just amaze me that you allow it in the group, normally you delete my comments and advise when it does not fit your agenda or benefits your ego. But you can give me again a ban to comment for a few days.

I'm retired now but used to travel in and out 8 times per year visa exempt with never a question asked. However as Tod always says everybody's experiences can be different and it always depends on your IO on the day. Also consulates will give you differing advice. Glasgow told me absolutely no more than 6 per year which I ignored with no issues. For complete peace of mind get the visa which best suits your circumstances.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

FYI ...The Thai Consulate in Glasgow is now permanently closed. Consul Sandy Stewart retires from his post as Honorary Consul for Thailand on 28th May 2021. The Consulate in Hull has also closed .... Shame really ....

While technically you are correct, there is no limit to 30 day visa exempt entries by AIR (and two per year by land entry) , you're just playing the odds and will eventually get denied entry IF they think you're 'abusing' the visa exempt system.

I would take what those officers said with a grain of salt because it comes down to the officer you're in front of when you stamp in to the country.

remember they can also always ask for the "3 proofz"

proof of funds (20k baht or the equivalent in CASH)

proof of onward travel (within the number of days you're getting stamped in for)

proof of lodging

IF you're asked but can't meet any of those you can be denied entry. I mean face it IF they wanna deny you entry they're gonna find a reason to

The 6 month METV seems tailor made for your situation, I mean you have FIVE entries in 91 days ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

The 6 month METV gives you unlimited entries during the 6 month validity, and each entry gets you stamped in for 60 days. It's really what you should have (unless there's another long term visa/extension you qualify for)

As I pointed out in messenger, that people have previously lived here for years on back-2-back visa exempt entries, OR had no problem ever getting stamped in doesn't mean you're gonna skate thru. Especially post-covid when they seem to have tightened up the 'no official limit to 30 day visa exempt entries by air' mindset..

Good luck, get the METV. It's the easiest and most trouble free choice for you

You mean โ€œby airโ€ instead of โ€œby landโ€?

we were thinking about retirement visas to come for about 9 months but at this minute 2 x

0 bhat is a bit much . Maybe at a later date.

Instead would you consider this METV the way to go and can you renew it ?

Can you apply for this visa in Thailand whilst on a 30 day visa exempt ? I live across the other side of the country to the Embassy in Australia so just enquiring as they donโ€™t reply to emails. TIA

however if you do that and your spouse is as you call it the rider . Should the main visa holder dies you do not have a valid visa and may be asked to leave the country. This happened a few years ago I Chiang Mai to an associate who had to leave and return on a visa waiver until she got things sorted ... .. we have used the 2 x
*****
0 just to be sure . However as our plans change after covid we will not be doing that and will use other waivers etc.due to shorter stays .

if your married you don't need two 800.000 just one person then you or your husband is a rider on that said visa.

@Lisa ***********
but as your comment has ZERO to do with the O/P being pulled aside stamping in visa exempt how about you make your own post asking about your visa options ๐Ÿ™‚
