I’m a US passport holder and I’ve been in Thailand ~6 months out of 12 the last 2 years. I’m headed back for a short (3 week) trip in April. If I meet all the requirements including the required cash and proof of flight out of the country, should I be ok with a visa exemption? Or will I be “safer” if I get a single entry tourist visa beforehand?
Sorry for the paranoia, just been seeing a lot of posts about people being denied entry lately...

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is concerned about re-entering Thailand on a visa exemption after previously spending significant time in the country. While some comments emphasize that having a tourist visa may provide peace of mind, the consensus suggests that as long as the user meets entry requirements (including proof of funds and onward travel), successful entry is likely. However, the unpredictability of immigration officers is noted, with recommendations to have all necessary documentation ready regardless of the visa type chosen.
There is no one that's gonna answer that question with ANY degree of certainty. It comes down to the mood of the officer you're in front of on the day you stamp in.
Have your proof of onward travel, your proof of funds and your proof of lodging just in case.
Keep in mind of the thousands of people who enter the country every week few if any are denied and most all of the denials are people living here on back-2-back visa exempt or tourist visa entries.
Some people get turned away at the airport, force to fly back to their home coutnry, or wherever they came from.. Your paranoia is justified.
You are better off to have a tourist visa.. Although, you are low-risk.. High risk people are the ones to back-to-back. Lower risk are the individuals that come less frequently - like yourself.
Full recommendation. have the 3 proofs (hotel, cash, onward travel) and a visa. After all, why not?
