Does anyone know if it possible to obtain a new DTV visa when the first one expires ?
Summary so far
The conversation revolves around the uncertainty surrounding the renewal process for the DTV visa in Thailand. Participants express their lack of knowledge about potential changes in immigration policies, especially since the visa was recently launched in July 2024. There are no definitive answers regarding whether the DTV visa can be renewed after expiration, and many suggest having a backup plan as no clear information is available from Thai immigration officials.

Here's a thought: currently nobody has thought about this, not even the Thai government. They will start thinking about it when the first DTV visas start expiring, 5 years after the first ones were issued. It might be a good idea to get a new one 6 months before that happens, even if you have a year or two left on your DTV.

Just to hedge against any craziness and confusion.

Yes, I called and confirmed. They said you can renew your DTV visa as long as the program is still being offered at the time of renewal. You can apply up to six months before it expires. The key phrase here is “IF it’s still being offered.” The DTV visa was originally introduced to attract remote workers, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, so there’s no guarantee the program will remain available indefinitely.

Unforgettabl*************
RemoteWorkBBC Called who though? Some random embassy worker has no real knowledge of visa policy in 3-5 years time. Not to mention that the applying for a new visa up to six months prior to expiry sounds quite questionable as you can’t have two valid visas at the same time and visa processing time is generally less than 6 months.

UnforgettableRambutan8343 Yes, I called the embassy. Who answers the phone is completely out of my control. No one knows and even if a government official commented on it now it may be irrelevant by the time your first DTV expires.

Generally, Thai visas become stricter over time as they feel pressured to respond due to people either misusing the visa or criminals using the visa to live/work in Thailand. Even if you look at the history of the Elite/Privilege visa you can see that the visa became stricter and offered less as it matured.
Nick *********
Nick *********
I feel like the thai government are regretting producing that visa from the start lol...let's hope it still exists by then. You can thank the elite visa owners for moaning about it and all the retarded tourists and agents that abused it for that outcome if so 🤣 ...There will always be a suitable visa for thailand. There could be totally different policies and visas by the time your DTV ends so I wouldnt worry. Immigration policies change often out here and usually with significant changes.

Lets just hope we dont see more foreigners on the news this year so there is no reason for them to remove it. DTV was implemented by the previous sitting government, not the new one & it was done outside of the remit of the organisations that normally oversea new visa policies. The soft power category has never made sense to anyone (3 month course, 5 year visa) but I think workation makes sense with it being marketed as a digital nomad visa and i dont see why they would benefit from removing it.
Gerry ********

exactly

Workcation visa is a huge benefit for thai economy and would be stupid for them not to have a solution in a more and more digital world.

But they should change the soft power option as it is just too big a loophole for exploitation

The workcation visa could be monitored and managed easily

@André *****
i agree. They already have and had the ED visas for courses so it never made sense to me why they added that category to the dtv other than the prevoous government trying to bump up certain entry figures and economy etc. Thailand did however need a digital nomad visa as many expats that live here work remotely or have youtube channels or other offshore income and their good value to thailands economy and generally behave while here. On the other hand, 3 month cooking course with a 5 year validity visa never made much sense

thank you for your insigt 🙏 I hope the remote work option will continue, but I also believe (and hope) the soft power will be cancelled or at least changed. It doesn't really make sense to grant multiple entry for 5 years with up to 180 days per stay just for attending cooking classes or Muay Thai - it is simply far too obvious a loophole for abuse. With fairly simple means, the Thai authorities could verify that people are complying with the rules regarding remote work.

@André *****
DTV is essentially a 'special' tourist visa, no matter what you consider it to be.

Behaving like a tourist/nomad on the DTV is definitely not misuse. Moving around and in/out of Thailand is the expected behaviour.

People who apply for the DTV under false/misleading pretenses (never intending to attend the course they booked) and then just living in Thailand probably does constitute misuse.

It is not a long term visa for residency, even though we can (almost) use it for that.

Having said all that, I see no reason why the DTV would not continue (they may remove the soft power categories), but you would almost certainly need to apply from scratch (as per your OP), in your home country, rather than extend.

I also applied under the Workcation category which is a perfect fit for me. Things may change for me within the remaining ~35 months, but it's too early to tell...

I am in sort of the sane situation. I am using the DTV to save up for a couple of years and switch over to a retirement visa. I wanted to get a retirement visa originally but I am just short of the 800k so this gives me some time to save up. If I weren’t required to attend a program I would use it as a tourist visa and be in and out of the country every few weeks. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.
André ******
André ******
OP
@Josh *******
Thanks for your insight. I definately don't consider DTV as a tourist visa, but of course when people misuse it as that, the option will eventually die 🥺

I use my DTV (remote work) exactly as it was intended, I have an income from abroad and pay thai tax on that. If everybody just used it as it was intended it would benefit both Thailand and the people using it immensely.

My concern is that I will not yet be able to live on my retirement savings when my current DTV expires (I will need a couple more years of stable income) so in order to stay in Thailand those extra years before Non-O is financially possible for me, I really hope a new DTV or similar option will be possible 🤞🙏

And the DTV also is different from your China visa in that aspect that you are allowed 180 days on every stay instead of the 60 days you have 😊
Josh ********
Josh ********
@André *****
I can’t answer how Thailand handles the DTV when it expires but I have had a 10 year multi entry tourist visa for China that allowed me 60 day stays at a time. Essentially what the DTV is minus the soft power or workcation requirement. No I can’t extend it and I needed to reapply for a new one after it expired. In 3 years you’ll get better answers to your question. Highly likely Thailand handles it the same way. In both cases the visa is not a substitute for a residence visa which I think a lot of people in this group are intending to use the DTV for. If you are intending to live long term in Thailand it would behoove you to transition to a long term residence visa and not a try live on a tourist visa. Last year’s crack down on border runs and 150 day limit demonstrates the government doesn’t want people living long term in Thailand on tourist visas. Unless things change there is likely going to be a change to rules once peoples visas start expiring. I agree people don’t need to be mean in their replies.
André ******
André ******
OP
@Josh *******
It is not hypothetical to ask if anyone knows if the DTV is possible to extend when it expires (as the rules are now) ?

Yes I know that the rules can change in the future, but I just want to know if anyone knows what the current rules say.

So that means it is pointless to ask ANY questions about the visa rules, because they are all subject to possibly change next week ?

And I am not upset, but I just don't understand that people who don't know the answer to what i ask, feel the need to state that and a lot of them in a very demeaning tone...??

If someone ask you for a specific chicken recipe and you don't know the answer, is it really necessary to reply 'I don't know and nobody else knows' or 'try Google it' ? Is not stating your opinion an option if you don't have the answer to the question ?
Josh ********
Josh ********
@André *****
you ask a question about a hypothetical and many things can change over the next 3 years so todays answer can be invalid in a month or year from now. You got guesses and truthful answers of I don’t know and then upset because they weren’t official answers because nobody has had to renew the visa yet including you. Predicting what the government will do in 3 years is a guessing game. Don’t be upset when you get answers you don’t like from a question that very few people are asking. Alot of posts in this group are hypothetical questions and receive the type responses. This visa wasn’t intended for people to live in Thailand for 10 years or indefinitely through renewals. It is at its core a 5 year multi entry tourist visa with stipulations for obtaining it. That is what most people don’t understand. The increased scrutiny on it suggests that renewing it won’t be allowed or very difficult to do especially if they keep catching people working while on it like the Russian tour guide this past week in Phuket or the dive instructor’s on Koh Tao last month. But that is my guess to your answer. Read peoples experiences about extending it at immigration and the difficulty of that. Plan on switching to a new visa in 3 years because I am when my DTV expires or even before it expires.
André ******
André ******
OP
@Josh *******
because maybe someone in a group with +70.000 members had actually inquired about this through official channels.....I know the rules are subject to change, but I just wanted to know if anyone knew if the DTV is renewable as the rules are at the moment.

Is it really such an inappropriate and offensive request ?

Isn't that what groups like this is for ?

If the answer to questions is: "go ask the embassy' or 'try Google it', what is the point of having groups on Facebook ?

really? You have three more years left on a Visa that they already starting to make changes on. It would be impossible for anyone to take any type of guess as to whether or not they will even continue to offer the DTV after it's first 5-year run.

The only guess I would personally make is that if they do continue to offer it, they will likely do away with the whole soft power segment and limit it to legitimate working digital nomads who provide solid proof of their International employment and income.
