Is it possible to depart Thailand on the same day your visa expires if you have a layover?

Quick question. I believe this is fine but I would love a more experienced opinion. My husband and I just extended our visa exempt and our new date to be gone by is Aug 27. If we buy plane tickets to Bali for 11:30pm departure for Aug 27 and 5 hours later we are on a layover at DMK (technically the 28th now) but we stay in the airport for our next flight out to Indonesia. Is this okay or will we be finned for staying past our visa?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is concerned about staying past their visa exemption when they have a flight departing at 11:30 PM on the day their visa expires. Responses clarify that as long as passport control is cleared before midnight on the visa's expiration date, and if the flights are on the same booking, it should not be considered an overstay. Overall, the community provides reassurance that minor overstays are often overlooked and should not pose problems during future visa applications.

It depend if u book 2 individual ticket. If it's same airline (one booking), just tell them and u will be ok, if it's 2 individual ticket, it will count as a 1 day overstay. Although I don't think u will be pay any fine. Having a small overstay like that doesn't hurt much, I never had any issue getting visa after. And right now I have a new passport and I don,t think they even look at old passport data.

Thanks, even when you can not pass Immigration at Chang Mai it is no problem, for less than 24 hrs overstay Immigration at International airports give you the stamp but no fine.

Not true, you are stamped as an overstay (under 24 hrs) but no fines levied...

There is no extra stamp from immigration if you leave Thailand within 24 hours of visa expiry. You don't have to go to the overstay desk, and you are just stamped out as usual.

Yeah, saw that above. Very good. It was more a general observation :)

We will be going through immigration in Chiang Mai as we purchased straight through tickets from CM to Denpasar. I appreciate the warning/information as it is always helpful as we do plan to come back to Thailand in the months to come

I'd still prefer not to have that stamp. See, e.g., the recent post about Penang not issuing a visa. Also problematic for fast track service. The one I use, at least, is not available "if you ever had any overstay".

Wherever you are stamped out of the country by immigration you have officially left the country. So if that happens before midnight on the 27th then you're ok.
Barry ******
You get stamped out at Chiang Mai if your international flight is on the same ticket.

Try their facebook page too, you can message them from there.

Thanks for the tip, I don't have calling on my current sim card but I will try to email them as Air Asia is the airline we were looking at!
Biff *******
If it's with a company like Air Asia you would need to double check with them. They're a point to point airline and sometimes they need you to get your bags and check in again for the second flight. Worth a phone call. ;)

Perfect, just wanted to make sure I was understanding correctly! Thank you so much for your help!

Can you clear passport control at Chang mai airport?

Give both flight tickets at check in.
Biff *******
That depends on how you buy the tickets. If you buy them individually, the first would be a domestic flight and you wouldn't go through immigration. If you buy one ticket which has two flights, the second would be a transfer and you would go through immigration in Chiang Mai.

Which if my final destination is Indonesia when I board my first flight in Chiang Mai that is when I would be stamped out correct?
Paul *********
What airport are you boarding at?

If you clear passport control on the first flight and are only in transit in DMK then no problem.

same airline ? ticket ?

Okay perfect, thats what I thought but wanted to make sure before purchasing tickets. We would be boarding our first flight out of Chiang Mai and into Bangkok for a layover to Denpasar
Robert *******
I not understand. You want to fly out at 11:30pm on Aug 27 and without coming back you fly out again on 28 Aug 5 hours later?

We would be flying from Chiang Mai to Bangkok and Bangkok to Indonesia. Chiang Mai at 11:30 pm the 27th then after flying and a layover it would be 4am on the 28th before we technically leave the country...
