The DTV Visa here in Canada is $650 CAD, or about $500 USD, seems high, would we be better off applying in Vietnam or Laos after we stay in Thailand on a 60 day Visa free on arrival? I see the fee is 10,000 THB in Laos, which is $400 CAD, much less than Canada, there is 2 of us, so the savings would be about $500 CAD, or about $380 USD if we did it in Laos?,That is a huge difference in fees

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user inquired about the cost-effectiveness of applying for a DTV Visa in Vietnam or Laos, compared to Canada. The application fee in Canada is $650 CAD, while it is around 10,000 THB (approximately $400 CAD) in Laos. Several commenters shared their experiences, suggesting that despite the lower cost in Laos, the overall savings might not justify the effort and potential complications. They recommended applying in Canada due to a more straightforward procedure and less stringent requirements at the consulate.

Best to apply in your country of residence, where the embassy know the kind of documents and how they look, that are common in your country.

Flight tickets hotels etc and maybe in 60+ days this route will be closed or requirements might be higher with papers you might have to get certified or from canada... If you are that short of cash for that risk, you will see that Thailand isn't that cheap anymore if the new tax laws they imposed and health insurance costs etc. IMHO

I understand your frustration about the very, very bad exchange rates in many countries, but when you consider it is a visa for 5 years, I think best is to apply for it in your home country when you are there now. The difference spread over 5 years is not worth the extra cost and time you need for applying elsewhere.

$150? How many times we have been wasted money on a night out offering drinks to a girl who didn’t even came back home with us😂…. Think about money wasted like that not a 5 years visa in paradise 😉😂

Where did you spent so much money on a single girl? I want to make a no go zone on google maps, haha

we did ours in Canada, through Vancouver consulate since based west. My husband, the main DTV holder, was approved in 2 hours. My dependent or trailing spouse was 24 hours. You do have to show the marriage license for the dependent and because our account is joint, the balance had to be equivalent to 1mm THB. Highly recommend use the Canadian option, they are easy to deal with and you won't have to worry about getting things notarized or certified which some nearby embassies are asking for.

You're not going to save anything by going to Laos for instance. By the time you've paid for your flight any cost savings will have evaporated. Not to mention that the criteria applied by Vientiane and Savannakhet is much more stringent than in Canada. You'll need to have a balance of minimum 500K parked in your account for no less than 3 months (and depending on how the consulate defines "3 months" I'd ensure it's 3 months + 5 days just to be safe) or you'll be rejected.

Apply in Canada if you're already there. They do things in a more casual, western style way. You don't want to be dealing with unfriendly by the book officials in Laos, trust me.

Not saying it's difficult to apply there - many reports suggest it should be relatively straightforward provided you meet their requirements, but Laos is really where people apply who have just come from Thailand and who don't want to fly back home.

I think we’ll just apply in Canada and get it over with

ANY savings would be negligible. coming here free stamp, then flying around S/E Asia, staying in hotels, so you can apply for a DTV at a consulate that's cheaper than the one is canada just doesn't add up.

I could see it if you were a kiwi (because their consulate in Wellington charges 2000NSD for the DTV about 41k baht :O)

The price is what it is and I'd say 650CAD or 16k baht in the grand scheme of things isn't that bad

I would say that depends. My wife and I got ours from Canada and the process of applying on-line was very easy and quick. I have read and heard from others that the process in each country is a little different much like the price. You will also need to show up in person and leave your passport. So it really depends on how much effort your willing to put in to save the money and take the risk of not having all the documents they will require.

I agree. I submitted to Ottawa, didn’t get a request for any additional documents and was issued the visa in 6 days
