Is it better to do a visa run to Malaysia or fly somewhere else for a few days given the current regulations in Thailand?

Hi,

I entered Thailand for the first time on 1/10/2025 and received a 60 days stay. I haven’t done any extensions or visa runs yet. I would like to stay in Thailand until 1/18/2026, so I’m planning to do a visa run until 28/11/2025 to get another 60 days.

I booked a border run with a local agency, but they told me they can’t process the visa run at the original border (Chiang Khong) due to stricter regulations. They suggested a different border, but the situation feels a bit uncertain. I’m considering whether it might be simpler to book a same- ay return flight to Malaysia instead.

Given the current circumstances, which option would be better? I hold a Hungarian passport.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on whether to proceed with a planned visa run at the Chiang Khong border or opt for a flight to Malaysia due to stricter regulations affecting border runs. Various comments suggest flying might be a better option, with recommendations to avoid same-day returns and consider other countries like Cambodia. Additionally, some users suggest applying for a 30-day extension at immigration as a simpler solution.

Why don't you simple ask for a 30 day extension at immigration. It will cost you 1900thb and your problem will be over

I would suggest flying somewhere for a few days (even just for a weekend) at the end of November, then coming back but you should have a return ticket. Then I think it should be okay.

This would count as a visa run and they are rejecting these in most cases now

Back home to your home country, they're after people like you trying to live in Thailand long term on tourist visa exemption.
