Hi! I am a Canadian travelling in Chiang Mai right now on a 60 days TR Visa. I have applied for the 30 days extension and it expires on Feb 13. I am looking to get the 60 days Covid extension so my question is by your experience is the letter from the Embassy a must? If so how did you get it? Thank you very much for your reply in advance. đđ

TLDR : Answer Summary
A Canadian traveler in Chiang Mai, currently on a 60-day Tourist Visa (TR), inquired about the necessity of a Canadian Embassy letter for applying for a 60-day Covid extension, set to expire on February 13. Responses varied, with most stating the letter is not required, as the Embassy typically does not issue such documents. Some users suggested contacting the Canadian Consulate for verification and that bringing an email stating the policy might suffice. Others mentioned successful extensions without the letter, emphasizing that discretion lies with Thai authorities. The last date to apply for this extension is currently reported as January 25.
i would be more worried if they make u pay 1000 more to get it immediately or if they will give you 15 days and make u wait to get the remaining 45. what a hassle
if the extra 1000 gets me a full 60 days add on to my last stamp then I would gladly pay but I guess that wonât happen đ

I already contacted the Canadian embassy. They donât issue any letters. Just go to the immigration office. My partner did not have any problem extending his visa without the letter.

This is what they said:
Please provide the below response for the Thai Immigration office for their consideration.

Thank you for contacting the Embassy of Canada.
The Embassy does not issue visa extension letters for tourists to remain in Thailand.
According to verbal communication from the Royal Thai Governmentâs Immigration Bureau, non-Thai nationals can visit any Thai Immigration office to request a 60-day extension of stay. Thai Immigration will not require a letter from the Embassy as part of the extension request. The length of time your extension will be granted is at the discretion of Thai authorities. Please note the Royal Thai government is under no obligation to extend short-term visas and may end the practice at any time. If your request is denied or you do not wish to change to an appropriate long-term visa category, you should make plans to depart Thailand. or contact the Thai Immigration Bureau.
If you wish to remain in Thailand in the long term, you will need to apply for the relevant visa (e.g. retirement, marriage, employment, study) from the Thai Immigration Bureau. Additional information is available on the Immigration Departmentâs website at
Just email the Canadian Consulate in Chiang Mai, they will respond telling you that they don't issue the letter. Print the email and bring it with you, worked for us when asked last year. The Consulate in Chiang Mai responds very quickly.

Currently the last date to apply is January 25th. That date may change but we probably wonât know until a few days before.

It purely depends on the office, but most donât need a letter. If they do then a printout from your embassies website saying they wonât issue the letter may suffice, otherwise email them and use their reply stating they wonât issue them.

Thatâs assuming your embassy wonât issue them. Sorry I donât know the Canadian embassies policy.
yes, but it is Canadian consular policy not to issue this specific letter as it has been officially advisable not to exit Canada for travel since 2020. We are both right on totally unrelated issues đ€
Ya thatâs what I was talking about. I was here in February 2020 and they wouldnât give me one in September. They told me to apply for a long term visa. Lol So Iâm on an extension based on retirement. Immigration wanted the verification letter along with my original pension papers. Which I donât understand. If theyâre seeing the original documents why is a letter from the embassy required?
Immigration works, simply telling you that I know for an absolute fact that this specific letter will not be issued by any Canadian consulate in any country ever but their official refusal to do so seems to be enough to process most extensions if all
Other paperwork seems to be in order. Best of luck
