got caught in the rain and just realized my passport took some damage. IT is all fluffed up and the most recent page the ink bled pretty badly. How big of a problem am I looking at?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is concerned about the damage to their passport caused by rain, specifically ink bleeding and fluffiness of the pages. Many commenters confirm that if a passport is deemed damaged, it is no longer considered valid. They recommend contacting the respective embassy to obtain a new passport or an emergency passport if necessary. The responses also highlight that some individuals have managed to use partially damaged passports successfully, but this may vary by country and the current strictness of border controls. Overall, the consensus is to prioritize getting a new passport.

Mine went through the was machine once. I made the mistake of asking immigration if my stamp was ok, they told me to replace the passport. The entry stamp was still visible. If I had it to do all over, I would not have asked at immigration.
Not a major issue just explain, my room got flooded passport completely soaked, stamp ink bled etc had no issues using it to leave and re-enter also have coffee stains throughout mine 😂😂 immigration just said take it you didn't want to go back and it didn't work 😂😂😂

I washed mine with my clothing in washing machine by accident . many of the stamps from entry and exit were washed out but the pages were fine and the passport over all was not damaged . I continued to use it for years until it expired with no problems at all . they would just flip to the first available page after the last stamp .

If it's any help you dont need passport to do 90 day report and you can board domestic flight using Thai driving license if you have one. Might help you get to Bangkok to do application for new passport through VFS Global. I'm assuming you are British?
Not offended- even flattered maybe. Just was curious if I used some brit slang or something :)

A big problem. You will need a new one. Happened to me (newbie-had it in beach bag). Was refused when I needed a visa.

The passport has a chip in it and sometimes they can still scan it to prove your identity.
Do u have a “Passport Card” along w your passport? Go to US Embassy and u can use your Passport card to prove your identity and apply for a emergency passport.
Not sure how long that takes though and they usually mail it to your Thai address, however u may be able to arrange for pickup at embassy? Give them a call.

After u get new passport invest in one of those for phone, car key, gate remote, wallet.. Anything u don't want getting wet.. Saves lots of headaches later... Alternatively use plastic bag🙄🙄 🙄rain season 🤷♂️

My was washed the night before I was due to fly home. The main page was ok and had no problems any of the 4 airports . Was just told to replace it when I got home. Don't panic like I did

Despite all the obvious and correct replies above, about 15 years ago I managed to send my UK passport along with my clothes to the laundry in Thailand.
It came back having gone through a full cycle and was looking extremely worse for wear with most of the stamps smudged.
I actually continued to travel extensively with that passport, every time I went through a border control I was of course challenged about it but I was polite and just told them it had been washed by accident. It was often met with bemusement.
I was never turned away from anywhere in what must have been 20+ passport controls over

years.
I’ll add a disclaimer that I have a second passport so the ‘pressure was off’ as I could have pulled out another passport if denied entry. I purposely tried to use it to avoid filling up my ‘good’ passport.
Of course it should be replaced.
But, with the above in mind I wouldn’t be panicking too much about getting home and going through the motions to replace.
(Might he country dependant, and border guards may have become much more strict).
Just my experience.

Happens when you go hiking in the rain. One of my friends from France tried to glue his back together. They were like "nah, buddy, get a new one!!!"

New one is needed, I had the same issue about 6 years ago and immigration wouldn't entertain it. The passport was literally less than 5 months old..... Gutted 😖

If you are from Australia, go to the embassy, but prepare for around a 3 month wait.
they were very slow to get passports done during covid times .. maybe it's quicker now

UK passport it would be considered damaged. I would contact your embassy and ask advice. You maybe able to get an emergency passport if you need one. If not apply for a new one.
Good luck 🤞

Rule number 1 don't take your passport out of your room.
Russell ************
Shayne Rochfort In many countries foreigners are obliged by law to carry it at all times on the person.
as an experiment, I didn't leave the house without my passport for three months in Chiang Mai, either in my pocket or hill tribe bag, everywhere I went, even out getting absolutely smashed. I never lost nor damaged jt.
as another experiment I have not taken my passport out of my drawer except for immigration visits, work permit, social department and opening my bank account last week for the past 3 years. Never needed it for traveling or anything, just use my licence.
You’ll need a new one asap. Depending on the country you’re from it can take months. If you need to travel then the airline or immigration may well reject your passport on the grounds of it being “defaced” and therefore invalid. Your current “allowed to stay” date will remain as is as that is stored in the immigration database, but get a new passport now.

Well for the USA that is considered a damaged passport, even if it is a little bit. It is no longer valid. And because it is damaged it does not qualify as proof of who you are. You have to turn the passport in and now provide even more documentation of who you are.
This happened to me and it was a pain as im a dual citizen with canada so i had to provide my birth abroad certificate from 1986 and signed affidavits from my sibilings and father stating i am.who i am.
Normally when you exchange to a new passport they use the old one as proof, but with damaged its a no go unfortunetly. :( again this is for american passport
