How much money is required for a family of four applying for Thai visas?

May I ask — when you submit your application for a family of 4 (say, 2 adults + 2 kids):

Is it that initially, the main applicant only needs to show 500,000 THB in their account?

Then later, when submitting the dependent visa applications for the partner + 2 kids, the partner need to show 500,000 THB x 3 = 1,500,000 THB in their account?

Or does the main applicant need to show 500,000 THB x 4 = 2,000,000 THB from the very beginning?

Most embassies don't need 500K for children, but officially it is needed, so better contact before.

There are some stories that when dependants apply, they also want to see the 500K from the main applicant to prevent swapping the money tricks.

So worst case you need 2M.

If you have your DTV approved already you can apply for dependant visa for wife and kids

You will need to get your marriage cert and birth cert for kids translated at the embassy

For financial requirements in their application submit proof of your funds with approved DTV for their dependant application and a sponsor letter showing you take responsibility for their financial needs

You can NOT divide the requirement by amount of family members.

The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs shows on the website minimum 500.000 Thb,

not 125.000 Thb if you have family or you may divide by your Facebook friends, so 10 Thb is also enough.

When the main applicant is applying you don't need to mention that you plan to have dependants off that visa, the 500k is all thats required at the time. The finance of dependants is not relevant at the time.
