How many times can my boyfriend enter Thailand on visa-exempt status in one year?

May 22, 2025
This is probably not the right place to ask but bear with me.

I’m here on a DTV but my boyfriend is here on visa exempt status. He has already flown in twice this year to Thailand but not stayed the full 60 days. Due to some family stuff he is having to fly out again for a week and come back.

Could someone please enlighten how many times a year he can come here on visa exempt status. He wanted to apply for DTV but he doesn’t have the full 500K yet.

Nationality: Central European.

Thanks for any advice whatsoever. Khap khun khaaaa

TLDR : Answer Summary
The number of entries allowed on visa-exempt status in Thailand is not strictly defined, but excessive entries can raise red flags at immigration. A traveler can come in on visa exemption as often as they like, but immigration officers may scrutinize frequent travelers who appear to be living in Thailand without a proper visa. It is suggested to have proof of travel plans, accommodation, and sufficient funds during entry. For a more stable stay, it's advisable for the boyfriend to consider applying for a tourist visa instead.

- There is no annual limit for visa exempt.

- If flagged they will ask for;

1. Exit flight

2. Accommodation

3. Proof you have more than 20,000 THB

*Iv'e been flagged before, I just booked a return flight on the spot & showed funds on my phone to the senior agent I was taken to.

They are beginning to scrutinise more, they will consider previous years history & visa's in Thailand when deciding. The boyfriend in this case is less likely to be flagged, but they may just ask to see a return flight.

Three times entry with VOA within 360 days is risky.

I entered two times via VOA in 2024 and one time in 2025. extended two times in 2024 so total 177days in Thailand in 2024.

In 2025 got flagged and could only enter the country because of my Thai girlfriend. First they didn’t want me let in the country. After the IO talked shortly with my girlfriend I was allowed to enter. But got a clear warning from the IO⚠️

There is no magic number of allowable entries, you play the free entry game until an IO calls you out on staying here as more than a "tourist"

I have had 4 visa extemptions in a row since last august. Allwats extended them 30days. Its okay to stay 6month with that per a calender year. My last arrival I got guestioned a bit and next time I arrive I will have a visa for that. But it all comes down the person in imigration. If he/she have a bad day, they can allways send you back where you came from. If you boyfriend not want to apply visa, I would recommend to pay fast track service at airport. These officers are usually way more pleasant 🙏

Unlimited entries by air or 2 entries by land.

What matters most is how long someone has been staying in Thailand for.

Next best solution is finding a visa run agency who will ensure that the process goes smoothly

Try to organise next bounce well in advance. Use an agent. They will look at passport and only book your bf if he can re-enter.

If he can’t bounce - they will advise.

He can do tourist or education visa if he doesnt have 500k now . Dont take risk to get deported

3 months tourist visa is great and you can change to 1 year education visa when you are in Thailand.

I agree with most comments, he doesn’t look like a genuine tourists but seems like someone who wants to live in Thailand but can’t even afford the “minimum” 500k. Please don’t abuse the system more because it will affect others.

Every entry is at the discretion of the immigration officer he will stand in front of, nobody else can answer this question. People can only give an opinion and mine is he stands a very good chance of at least being pulled aside, if not being denied entry outright. Make sure he has the three proofs required for visa exempt entry, a flight out, accommodation booked and 20k baht (or equivalent in another major currency) IN CASH.

I did 2 runs over 3 months and I got warned coming back through on my 2nd run to get the right visa.

He's right at the threshold imo.

I had the same issue.

On my third VOA I got flagged.

Was told to get proper Visa otherwise I will be send home.

Entry with DTV (workation) was then no issue anymore. Asked also the office if the flag in my record can be removed. He smiled and removed it without questioning.

If he hasn’t been in Thailand for years prior to this he’s probably fine but playing with fire. Be prepared to answer questions. Consider applying for even a basic tourist visa 60 days for more security.

Well you yourself have made it obvious he's trying to live in Thailand full time on visa exemptions. IOs at the airport can spot that easily too.

There is no hard and fast answer to this as no hard coded rules , its up to the immigration officer one encounters at the check point. What they look for is pattern of stay (many think its the entry's, its not, its how much time in country and/or pattern of coming and going that makes it looks like might be working or something else not meant to be doing with exempt). Looking at info you gave, in my opinion, 3 entrys in 5 months, not going to raise red flags in itself, just a week out might though. Overall would say 90% or more chance he is let in, but he might be told to get a visa next time. At this point would be thinking about tourist visa (TR) as they are bit more relaxed if on that, though cannot stay visa running forever on those either

Make sure he is really clean cut when he flies back in. I recommend getting a medium fade haircut even if he doesn’t “like it”.

Why can't he apply for tourists visa?

It could help him.

Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa

Valid for 6 months from the date of issue

Up to 60 days of stay and extendable by an additional 30 days per entry.

There is no set rule for flying but if he doesn’t look like a genuine tourist they could pull him aside and either say next time he needs a proper visa or they deny entry

He can do it until he can't. Immigration will not allow him to live here without a long term visa. It's up their discretion on every entry whether they let him in or not.

he could allready get denied on his return. 3 entries on visa exempt is allready playing with fire these days. many people get rejected and send back home. he should get a proper visa before returning. single entry tourist visa, multiple entry tourist visa, ED… you have some options… but the tourist visa doesnt guarantee entry! especially with that travel history. you are abusing the system. get a visa!

it is because 2-3+ visa exempt entries in a year is seen as abusing the system. things have changed. you might only get away with it by using land borders and sketchy tour operators.

no, it’s not seen to be ‘abusing’ the system. You and I both know people doing it for YEARS. Things always change. But if you pay attention, nothing has changed. If they wanted to limit the number of entries, they would. Clearly they leave the gate open. Until they change that, nothing material changes in spite of the few regular trouser soilers you see here. Who clearly have never used an agent or border bounce agency, or fasttrack services. Options abound. People just need to pay attention to the situation as it slowly evolves
