TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian passport holder can re-enter Thailand multiple times a year without a visa. There is no limit to how many times one can enter by air, while via land borders, the maximum is typically twice per year without a visa. Travelers can stay for 30 days per visit and can exit for a short time (around 7-8 days) before returning.

in 2022 I entered 8-9 times. never stayed longer than 3 weeks. And stay out for about 7 -8 days each time. never had a single question.

So you can fly in stay 30 days fly out for a few weeks then come back 30 more days and keen doing this all year round ?
in theory yes. Some immigration offices spout a rule about 6 times in a year but it doesn’t exist. However they have the discretion as to whether the allow you in or not.
a year is a stretch though. Not likely to succeed.
And I think the problem lies more in the staying duration than the number of entries. My sixth entry within a year went flawless back in 2018. I never stayed long but visited Thailand occasionally between other countries.
no, that's not gonna happen. Although there isn't an official limit, they won't let you stay on tourism-purposed visas or alternatives for a full year. Problems may start once you pass the six month mark (in a 12 month period). It's up the immigration officer in question, and you could succeed a few extra times even beyond six months, but a year is a stretch.

No limit by air, maximum twice by land border.

Assuming your meaning with no visa. If so twice via a land border. Technically no specific limit via air until the immigration officer stops you.
