TLDR : Answer Summary
There is no official limit on the number of times you can enter Thailand on a 30-day visa waiver by air. However, if you frequently enter Thailand, immigration may question your status as a genuine tourist. Some commenters noted that repeated entries (especially more than three times) could raise flags and result in entry denial. Entering by land typically has a limit of two entries per calendar year.
By land it is two per calendar year, by air no such limit exists. However you might have problems when you do not appear to be a genuine tourist

Lately I know a few people who had problems after three times in a row

There is no official rule that I'm aware of. HOWEVER if you have a history of back to back entries, by land or by air they can deny you entry If they believe you are not a genuine tourist. If this is the case, you should have at least your 3 proofs, 20k baht or equivalent in CASH, proof of onward travel, and proof of hotel booking. I have been questioned myself without any back to back entries.

As often as you are being considered a 100% tourist or not in a function that would actually require a proper visa.
