I travel to Thailand every December for 3 weeks and every July for 3 weeks
I arrive on 21st December for 13 nights then leave to fly to mandalay for 6 nights then back to Bangkok for 2 nights
I only access via airports will this be a problem on visa exemption
I have proof of all onward flights
Is there any limit per year on visa exemption arrivals for this type of travel

TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian passport holder traveling to Thailand multiple times a year under the visa exemption scheme should not encounter any issues as long as they have proof of onward travel and meet financial requirements. It is advisable to carry the equivalent of 20,000 Thai baht in cash upon arrival and have documentation of accommodation for the first night.
I would not expect a problem at airports upon arrival. You should have equalivent of 20,000 Thai baht in cash on you with your hotel booking or place of staying in Thailand...at least for first night or so. Enjoy your holidays.
