TLDR : Answer Summary
There is no official limit on how many times a US citizen can apply for a 60-day tourist visa for Thailand in one calendar year. However, it is noted that some embassies or consulates may impose their own thresholds. Individuals have reported difficulties after applying for 2 to 4 back-to-back tourist visas, with some suggesting a multi-entry tourist visa (METV) as a better option for longer stays.

as you can see everyone has their own opinion of how many you can get, but what is pretty sure is the fact you're not gonna live here on back-2-back tourist visas like people did pre-covid shit show ๐Ÿ˜•

Your best bet is to get the 6 month METV from the eVisa online system at one of the thai consulates in the US before you wing your way here. That visa will give you unlimited entries of 60 days each for the 6 months the visa is valid for, meaning you can get almost 9 months of stay out of it before you have to worry about going to get a new tourist visa at a nearby thai consulate

I think you have your answer, there is NO official rule about it

I guess when you get denied applying for one you'll know that you have too many ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

You'll likely have issues after 2. From personal and friend's experiences. Maybe 3 or 4 if you're lucky

I doubt 4 in one year. That's a full 12 months of back-to-back SETVs.

As far as I am aware, having a tourist visa does not guarantee entry either... you can still be denied entry upon arrival... a non-immigrant visa is much more secure.

There is no official limit on how many times a person can apply for a visa.

Neighbor countries did stamp visa in the past that the person does not get another tourist visa at that Embassy after 4 or more back to back visa applications.

Get a visa that fits your purpose of living inside Thailand, do not use the short term tourist visa options.

No limit by law. But some embassy/consulate start telling you to get a proper visa when you have back-to-back tourist visas more than some threshold they set on their own.
