TLDR : Answer Summary
To extend a 90-day visa in Thailand for an additional four months, the options include the Special Tourist Visa (STV) which can allow stays up to 9 months or performing a visa run by traveling to a neighboring country to apply for a new 60-day tourist visa. Other methods may involve checking the availability of a 6-month multi-entry tourist visa at the Thai embassy, which can allow multiple entries and extensions.

Check
@Di***
if the Thai Embassy/ Consulate in your country still sells the 6 months multi entry Tourist visa. It allows you to stay 60 days and then a border hop to get another 60 days. (for now you still need a Thailand pass). This can be done untill the end date of this visa. So if you do a borderhop right before the end date, you can almost stay 9 months (last entry 1 extension of 30 days).

Just go to the embassy in Laos, or Cambodia and apply for a new 60 day tourist visa and fly back in.

is that so easy with current restrictions?

There’s no trick. You either meet the requirements for a yearly extension from that visa or you don’t.

I don’t want a year I want 4 months in total

Then you can’t extend. You’d need to do a bounce out and back - assuming you’re from a country that allows visa exempt entry.

visa run. Pop over to neighboring country. I am not sure what the rules are today. Last I knew you had to fly but the rules are changing and will likely be different when it matters most to you.

I think the Saturn boarder is open now so if your based in Phuket that's a option.

If they're still offering the STV that can give you up to 9 months. Otherwise you'll be looking at a border bounce as regular tourist visa (60 days) and visa exempt (30 days) both only allow 1 extension of 30 days

The only proviso to that is the possibility of covid extensions being allowed still but with land borders now opening it seems very unlikely that they will extend those past this month

I’ll look in to it. Thanks

I was wondering if visa runs were a thing currently

people have begun doing them to Cambodia, Malaysia and Vietnam as restrictions drop and with land borders opening Laos will also be a possibility (maybe avoid Myanmar). However, if you're not bothered about actually visiting those places then have a look to see if the STV visa is still a thing. It was introduced for covid, then they were going to scrap it and then they reintroduced it. I've not looked recently to see if it's still a thing Cost will be about $120 Australian. You'll have to show proof of funds for your length of stay and they'll ask to see accomodation booking for the time there but a cancelable booking on Agoda or booking.com should be enough to satisfy them)

I've read on these sites they want to see fully paid accommodation for full period

they usually do, along with health certificate and criminal records check

they say that but I got one no issue with a completely cancelable one
