So how many consecutive Border bounces can you do in a row with a tourist visa/visa exempt before you get turned away by immigration? I know it depends on the discretion of the Immigration officer, and that technically we are allowed 6 entries by air or 2 entries by the land border per year. Wondering what others experience has been and how to have the best odds or re-entry.

The reason I ask is because I am here in Thailand for special medical treatment, but I am not able to get a medical visa sponsorship from the clinic where I am receiving treatment. So far I have done one border bounce by air this year, and my next one is coming up in about a month. I would hate to be turned away and sent back to my home country, as this treatment is only available here in Thailand.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When considering how many consecutive border bounces you can do in Thailand with a tourist visa or visa exemption, the answer largely depends on the discretion of the immigration officer. While there is no official limit to entries by air, you are allowed only 2 land border crossings per calendar year. Many users recommend ensuring that you can prove your legitimate reasons for being in Thailand, such as for medical treatment, to minimize the risk of being questioned or turned away. It is advised to maintain documentation, like medical letters or bills, to support your claims and show that you are not working illegally. Some experiences suggest that as long as you are not trying to stay in Thailand continuously without proper visa, re-entry should generally be manageable.

I hope all works out for you. I plan to initially live in Thailand but may eventually move to Cambodia or another nearby nation. If so, I’ll need to go to Thailand monthly for medical treatment and will be in a similar boat.

I have been in Thailand since December. And I’m in a van right now coming back from my second and consecutive land border bounce. The officers in both Thailand and Malaysia were super nice at each window.

The other person who went with me had been in Thailand for 3 years and she has taken 1 month holiday in Malaysia, otherwise she said it’s been a same day exit/entry or just an overnight for a quick get away.

Even though whatever treatment cannot get medical visa. You can still get a letter from them that would help if you got stopped. (Anything to prove you are not working)

- If you also have the originals, as well as copies, of your medical bills, this will emphasise the legitimacy of your length of stay.

Officially you can do 2 land border crossings per calendar year (01 JAN - 31 DEC) and there is no official limit on Fly out/In border bounces, however you may run into an overzealous I/O that sees otherwise...you can also extend all Border Bounces at immigration for 1,900 THB for an additional 30 Days, until the I/O says you can't...you can buy a 60 Day SETV at any Thai embassy/consulate for 1,900 THB and you can extend that at immigration for an additional 30 days for 1,900 THB (90 Total Days in Thailand), you can get 2, 60 Day SETV's back to back but once again you may run into an overzealous I/O that says that says you can't when you arrive back to Thailand...Good Luck, the Royal Thai Embassy and the Royal Police don't communicate well together so the embassy will sell you visas and the I/O's will deny them...

Adding to what brandon said, it really depends on the person and your conditions. As long as you can prove that you're not working illegally in Thailand and have a legit reason to be here (medical treatment) you won't be turned away. Before covid I lived in Thailand about 3.5 years on tourist visas/exempt entries. Never had a problem.

thank you for the response. I'm assuming things were a bit more relaxed before covid? My concern is that they won't accept medical treatment as a reason for re-entering unless I get a proper medical visa.

immigration was actually tightening up before covid. Covid just made it easier in the tightening up timeframe. Understand that immigration profiles, and stereotypes certain traveler types, and as soon as they scan your passport barcode, and get your fingerprint, they have your whole history with them. What kind of treatment are you getting that the hospital/clinic won't certify your treatment?

the treatment I am getting is for a skin condition, and the clinic is one of the only places in the world where this treatment is available. It is very small, and according to them they are not able to sponsor medical visas at this time. But as I mentioned, they are reforming their company and may be able to provide visas in the near future. I am trying to find what information they will need to provide in order to be able to sponsor their patients.

@Kyle ******
they need medical treatment approval by the Thai FDA of what they are doing to begin with. How long is the treatment for, as that can make a big difference?

I appreciate your response. That might be the problem, as the condition that I have is not recognized by the Thai government. The treatment is used to treat other conditions, though. Do you know of any resources where I could further read into this?

@Kyle ******
you might try seeing an actual licensed doctor, and see what treatment they recommend for your condition. There are very few actual medical conditions not recognized.

You have some incorrect information here.

There is no limit to entries by air. There is no 6 entry limit. The only limit written into law is that you can do 2 land border entries with visa exempt per calendar year.

What matters much more than the number of air entries is how long you've been in Thailand. You'd likely have no problem at all coming in for 1 week every month for a year, because you're not spending that long in Thailand.

Where you run into problems is if you are entering, getting an extension, then leaving and re-entering immediately, and repeating this. Then you are clearly trying to live or stay in Thailand and are not a tourist, therefore you are not using the appropriate entry option. I would expect to be questioned on your 3rd entry, regardless of how you are entering. They will likely ask a lot of questions about why you are living in Thailand on an incorrect visa, an warn you that it's your last time.

Until you run into that Overzealous I/O at the Airport that says you can't fly In as many times as you like....it's a known fact

@Jeremy *******
which I clearly stated in my reply

@Brandon ***********
it might be your 8th entrance or never...nobody every knows but a blunt fact at 3 is very disheartening to everyone and its not verifiable...so in turn its a made up number
Brandon ************
@Jeremy *******
it's based off recent reports. 3rd entry is going to be 4-5 months in Thailand already which is when people begin having trouble.
Jeremy ********
@Brandon ***********
or your 3rd arrival could be 30-45 days depending on the way you travel..there is no set algorithm for it
Alistair **********
@Jeremy *******
how can you tell that a 3rd entry would be 30-45 days? That's a number you just made up, show some facts man
Brandon ************
@Jeremy *******
you're twisting my response to your own notions as I clearly said it's getting an extension and the border bouncing and entering again. Sick of arguing with you.
