I found Kota Bharu gave me less issues than KL.

fly to vientianne. easy and not that complicated. and fly back instead of a borderrrun because at that border the like to change the rules day by day

Elly Murry there used to be flights from Chiang Mai to Udon Thani, and then bus it from there.

People have got a Non-O in less than a week
Or you can pay an agent to do the whole process , in Thailand , but it will be expensive and probably not much quicker

All of the Embassies and consulates in Malaysia are known for not being very user-friendly. A month is not unheard of for a visa application, after they send 3-4 requests for documents that you already sent. It's possible it could be faster, but I would plan for a month so you're not caught out if that's what happens.
