If you apply for a retirement visa in the uk, you get an initial 90 day visa, how long do you have before you have to use it? Can you apply for it say one month before travelling?
Answer summary
When you apply for a retirement visa (NON-O) from the UK, it is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. However, you can apply for it up to 90 days prior to your intended travel date. The 90-day countdown for your permitted stay in Thailand begins on the day you receive your stamp upon arrival, not from the visa's issuance date.

Let's assume you applied today ,and you are granted 90 visa tomorrow.

Your 90 day visa count down starts tomorrow not the day you arrive Thailand. If that is what you are asking.

Alan Baxter You don't lose any days. You can enter Thailand on day 89 of the visa and will still get a 90-day entry stamp

When you arrive in Thailand you extend it, called an Extension of Stay commonly called a Retirement Visa.

It 90 days because it's a 90 day visa. So you've plenty of time to use it. You enter, get 90 day stay. And that's your visa used.

Lynnette Munoz thanks for the reply, just to clarify! if i apply and recieve the 90 day visa one month before i travel from the uk does the 90 day start from the time its issued by the Embassy or when i arrive in Thailand and it gets the appropriate stamp at the airport?

Alan Baxter the "visa" to enter thailand is valid for 90 days once it's issued. So you have those 90 days to fly in. Then on arrival you'll be given a stamp for a "permitted stay" of 90 days.

Alan Baxter your 90 day permitted stay in Thailand starts as soon as the person stamps your passport at the immigration point in the Thai airport

A non-O visa is valid for 90 days from the day it is issued by the embassy. So you can apply anytime up to 90 days before your trip.

Once you enter Thailand you'll receive a 90-day permission to stay stamp that's separate from the validity of the visa.
