Hi does anyone know how long you can be out of Thailand with a retirement visa before it expires? Have had to delay returning due to getting health problems sorted in home country. Thanks!
Answer summary
The duration that one can stay outside Thailand on a retirement visa (specifically a NON-O visa) depends on whether they have a re-entry permit or a valid visa. If the individual holds a re-entry permit, they can stay outside until the expiration date of the permit. In general, there is no strict limit on how long one can be out of Thailand as long as they return before their visa or extension expires. If the extension expires while outside the country, they must apply for a new visa upon their return.

Any time you want as long you are coming back before it expires
If you have an actual NON-O retirement visa that gave you 90 days stay in Thailand and left then that is done and you have to make a new application. If you had re-entry permit on that it is done when you permit to stay stamp is up.
First question, VISA or Extension of Stay? Second question if Visa is it multiple entry? Now for short answer, look at the stamps in your passport they will show expiration dates for Visa, Extension of Stay and any Reentry permit you may have. Everyone seems to confuse Visas and Extensions of Stay, they Are Not the same thing and it makes a difference. Figure out what you have and go from there.
Steven L. Daugherty sorry asking for my parents, they have Non O visas, that they extend every so often, just wondering if there’s any way to renew if can’t get back in time before the extension expires as been out of Thailand 7 months already? Or do they have to start the process again if can’t get back before it expires? Thanks
GenuineLynx8785 If their extension expires before they can return to Thailand and file for another extension then they will have to start fresh. In home or another Country Get a new Non-O visa, come to Thailand and before that visa expires get a new 12 month extension and a new reentry permit. There are also other visas they may qualify for, but the Non-O and 12 month extension is the most well known.
GenuineLynx8785 It would all be pretty easy as I'm guessing they already know the routine and already have Thai bank accounts etc. Only thing new is now you apply for the initial visa on-line.
Steven L. Daugherty and Maria Fredriksson, sorry, but the Non-Imm-O/A Visa is the "1-year Longstay Visa" which comes with a multi re-entry permit included. The real "Retirement Visa" is the 90-days Non-Imm-O single entry Retirement Visa. The 1-year multi re-entry Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa got discontinued by October 2023. The thredstarter probably is talking about his "1-year Extension of (the) Stay Permit based on Retirement", for which he bought a re-entry permit and which will have an expiry date. The threadstarter probably is confused as so many readers in the visa advice groups, who cannot and do not know the difference between a visa and a stay permit
Assuming you either have a multiple entry visa or a re-entry permit you can be out until the expiry date. Realistically a few days before to give time to apply for the next extension
