TLDR : Answer Summary
To extend your 60-day visa exemption in Krabi, you can apply up to 30 days before your visa expires, but it's recommended to do so within the last 14 days. You will need to visit a local immigration office and bring several documents: your passport (valid for at least 6 months), a completed TM.7 extension form, passport photos (4×6 cm), photocopies of your passport's bio page and current visa stamp, TM.6 arrival card, and proof of residence (such as a hotel booking or rental contract). The extension fee is 1,900 THB, and check if your immigration office requires a TM.30 form. For convenience, getting a hard copy of documents is advisable, and some places may assist with photocopying for a small fee.

Most offices it's 30 days before, except Bangkok and Chiang Mai it's 45 days. I understand Jomtien allows only 7 days

It doesn’t matter when you apply for the extension as long you do it before the 60 days runs out.

Some immigration offices ask you to do it in the last 2 weeks but this is not official.

Also at least 2 empty pages in your passport. If you are looking at non-O visa, travel outside Thailand you will need re-entry permit, which will take up pages and the law require you have 2 empty pages in your passport whenever you enter the country.

Gary Fordham Krabi requires you to make the application at any time within your last 2 weeks of the initial visa exemption period.

For an extra 100baht, they"ll do the photo for you.

Best immigration office I've been to for extensions. Wifi ; water and aircon with pleasant officers helping you

The times we've been there, we were handed the application form to extend in which you signed and dated it only. The rest they completed in the back office via your passport and their database.

Gary Fordham my recommendation is that you get hard copy’s. In Phuket they help with copying for a small fee. I would ask the hotel reception. If you stay at hotel ask also for a copy of tm30 form that they digitally have filed, immigration officer might not accept hotel booking. I had lease agreement but only copy of tm30 was accepted. I think you will find tm7 form on Thai immigrations webb page, or you can fill it out at IM office.

Gary Fordham our first extension a couple years ago at Krabi we arrived at 1pm on the Friday and walked out at 2.30pm with the extension. Our initial visa exempt was due to end on the following Monday.

Gary Fordham I would think any time in the last 30 days. Certainly wouldn’t leave it late in case you need something else and have to return.

we tried to extend 30 days before the end of the visa exemption last year. Immigration officer was very clear their policy was applications only accepted in last 14 days. Ended up extending in Chiang Mai few days later (CM allow applications to be completed within 45 days of last day!!)
