I'd like to apply for a 30-day extension to my visa exemption. How long before it expires can I get that done at immigration? And does the extension begin from the date the exemption stamp expires or from the time I go to immigration to apply for the extension? Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
To apply for a 30-day extension to your visa exemption in Thailand, you can do so any time, as it will be added to the end of your existing stamp. However, the timing of your application may depend on the specific immigration office. Some offices only accept applications in the last week of your visa exemption, while others may allow applications a couple of weeks prior. Remember to have a TM30 address registration on file, and the extension costs 1900 Thai baht.

These are the common found requirements for the 30 days extension of stay at your local Thai Immigration office for 1900 Thai baht. Be sure to have a TM30 address registration on file with Thai Immigration.
It totally depends on the immigration office where you are applying when you can apply for 30 days tourism extension. You need to check with your local office.
Jomtien office and a few others accept tourism extension applications only within the last week of your stamp. Samui office and maybe a few more accept when a couple of weeks remain. Others accept tourism extension applications anytime since those have 30 days or more remaining policy.
30 days tourism extension is added (top-up) to your current stamp, not starting on the day of application. You wouldn't lose any day when you apply for it in advance.
