How can I get a Non-O A criminal background check while living in BKK? I am from America... and, I assume I can do the medical verification here also?

TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain a Non-O A visa as an American expat in Bangkok, you will need a criminal background check and medical verification. It's important to note that the Non-O A visa cannot be obtained within Thailand and must be acquired from a Thai consulate in your home country, which requires a background check and a medical certificate. However, if you are applying for a 90-day Non-O visa followed by an extension, you can use an income affidavit from your embassy instead of a background check, provided you meet the financial requirements. Generally, you will need to demonstrate financial stability with a bank statement or income proof when applying in Thailand.

Note: The second option Tod listed to meet the financial requirements to apply for a Non Immigrant O Visa is the Income Method. You just need to have monthly income from outside Thailand - usually one's home country. Then go to your own country's Embassy in Bkk - sign an Income Affidavit (Embassy Letter) swearing that you gave this income. For Americans there is no proof required - just the sworn statement. To get this Form go to the American Embassy website (consular services I think) Make an Appointment on line and download the affidavit form (it can be filled in on line). Fill it out but don't sign it until on the presence of the Embassy officer. It cost $50 or Thai Baht Equivalent. The website tells you what they consider the exchange rate to be for the fee. You state your income in US Dollars. With the Dollar losing ground lately against the Baht it is best to wait until you are at the Emassy to fill that it. And Best to stare a monthly income amount in your favor against future exchange loses as the form is good for 6 months. You include this raised seal stamped Income Affidavit in your Non Imm O application. Don't add proof documents - the Affidavit is enough. When applying for the Non O 90 days take the original but don't let them keep it because you need it to apply for the one year Extension of Stay which will come up 45 days or so after getting the Non O awarded.

Ah - consistency from one Imm office to another. What I wrote applies for Krabi and I believe in, some other outlying Imm Offices. And when applying for the Non O 90 day in Penang then doing the one year Extension of Stay in Krabi. They want to see the original of the Embassy Affidavit in both places. A friend went through this sequence just a few months ago - Penang then Krabi and verified what I thought I knew. By the way if I rememberd to ask I've never been refused to get back an original document in an application procedure as long as I had a good copy to hand to them., i.e. Rental / Lease Agreement and the Income Affidavit was examples.

In bangkok if you are applying for a 90 day Non-O using the income method, in addition to the notarized document from your consulate you must also show proof that the amount on the letter is backed up by something (bank statements, pension letter etc).

Also in Bangkok IF you are applying for a 90 day Non-O using banked money there is no seasoning required BUT you must show the money came from overseas.

Also when applying for a Non-O using the consulate notary in Bangkok they have you make a copy then stamp it saying you provided the original when you got the Non-O and the officers accept that copy when you apply for the yearly extension 45 days later so you don't have to go get another letter from your consulate.

Okay, I think we're confusing a couple things which are commonly called "retirement visas"

First is a year-long multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O-A (Longstay) visa. You CANNOT get this visa inside of thailand, period, end of story.

You get from a thai consulate in your country before you wing your way here. It requires a background check, a medical certificate and proof you have the equivalent of 800K baht in a bank in your country.

The other 'retirement visa' is where you come here, apply for a 90 day Non-Immigrant Type O <- (note the lack of the A after it) visa and then apply for a yearly extension of stay after that. It requires NO medical certificate, no background check and you meet the financial requirements by banking 800K in an account in your name for 60 days prior to your yearly extension application, using a notarized statement from your consulate stating you get 65K baht in income from abroad OR by using a combination of banked money and income to hit the 800K baht per year.

If you have pensions of more than

baht a month you do not need 800k in the bank. You can mix and match too. Ie 35k/400k

🤣👍 Have had the funds in UOB bank account for last 10 months... Actually, it's been a good investment with the strength of the ฿ vs. $... 😜

You only need a background check if applying in the USA and then it can be from your local police. Unless of course things have changed.

You do not need criminal background check if you apply extension based retirement.

@T**
, you can't get a Non-O-A visa in thailand :/

You can’t get an O-A in Thailand. The LA counsul will accept a medical check from a Thai hospital. Police check must be from the states.

Tim Dollar : It is extension what you are applying but first you need to change exempt to non imm status.

- hey there! Hope you’re well. I recently read that if you’re in Thailand you don’t need the medical or criminal checks. Just the $. Info was from the Pattaya City Expats Club. Could certainly be incorrect or old info but there you go. Document is dated

This is not an extension. It is my initial application for the Non-O A... I am coming back into Thailand on a 30 day exempt.
