US passport holder with a current O Visa with extension based on retirement that expires in Feb. Plan to apply for the O-A while back in the States in Dec. I've been told that obtaining the state-authorized, or FBI, required verification of a non-criminal record is time-consuming. Does anyone have any recent experience with this? I will only be in the States for 3 weeks an now am not sure if this allows enough time.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A US passport holder currently on an O Visa plans to apply for an O-A visa while visiting the States for three weeks. They seek advice on the time-consuming process of obtaining a state-authorized or FBI verification of a non-criminal record. Community members suggest gathering all application requirements beforehand and utilizing two-day walk-in services in Los Angeles. They also emphasize the importance of researching specific state procedures for obtaining police clearances.

If you are in USA only three weeks...I suggest you gather all needed requirements for your O-A application and fly to Los Angeles...use their two day walk-in service. (And on return . fly from LA to Bangkok vs Florida to Bangkok).

I've just visited the US Embassy BKK website and learned that the FBI check can be done from here. Well, part of it... You can have the fingerprinting done here and then send the fingerprint card and application to the FBI in the States, along with the $18 fee payable via credit card (downloadable form). Include an email or phone number and allow 12 weeks for processing. If fingerprints are required by the state of FL, I'm going this route...

Chris Denise Badger the Thai Consulate is a $25-30 Uber/Lyft ride from LAX. Hotels nearby too. Good Luck😊

BTW. ...I had explored doing mine as walk-in. LA Union Train Station a $20 ride away fm Consulate. But decided to mail it in instead.

I am flying into LAX and have 2 full days there. But I can't do anything without having the background verification in hand to submit. I've emailed the department in FL hoping for clarification on how to proceed from here. I'll update here when they've replied...

I thought you only had to do it at your home police department. Took me ten minutes that way. I’d have to go back and read it again.

Chris Denise Badger that is a recent change. 😢 but I see NO other changes 😀

Yes, that's the point. They do not provide a form and it must come from a state agency or FBI. Bummer

that is a NEW CHANGE.

"Letter of verification stating that the applicant has no criminal record (verification have to valid for not more than three months and must be issued from a state or Federal Bureau of Investigation only. Online criminal record without authorizer’s signature is unacceptable )"

Chris Denise Badger use the Los Angeles Thai Consulate. That is who I used. I am from Oklahoma. You can too. By mail ten business days. Walk on too. Turn in morning first day, pick up afternoon next day.

Yep it only took me 20 minutes at my local city police department. Took in the form provided with the O-A application. Gave it go the Officer at Reception Desk. Sat in reception room and in 20 minutes Officer returned the forms stamped NO POLICE RECORD with City Seal on it. I took it to my local bank and I signed it...my bank notarized my signature. No fingerprinting. No charge for the police report.

It now needs to be issued by a state, or the FBI. And it needs to be signed, as per the Washington, DC webpage. I've contacted the state of Florida in order to see what they require.

I went to the city I lived in. The one on my driver license.

What's "home police department"? The city, county, state, or federal department?

Police Clearances are State specific stuff and you need to google around for the state you're going to use to see what's what. I know that most places you can walk into a Mailboxes Etc and get fingerprinted and have a background check. I am not sure about your state.

I don't know that it's time consuming IF you do your due diligence BEFORE you go back, but it'll take as long as it.

Agreed. I've contacted the FL department yesterday and waiting a reply. Can't wait to see the response.
