I’m going to extend my tourist visa in the next few days in Bangkok (British passport). I’ve read conflicting information on how this works. Do you just turn up and get the extension straight away, like you do when extending the visa exempt , or do they keep your passport and it takes several days to process? I understand you need to take photos and proof of you leaving Thailand within those 30 days. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Extending a tourist visa in Bangkok typically allows you to receive an extension at the Chaengwattana Immigration Office without leaving your passport for several days. While some locations might have different procedures, the general consensus is that they stamp your passport for processing rather than holding it for an extended period. Make sure to bring necessary documents, including a TM30 address registration, photos, and proof of travel out of Thailand within the next 30 days.

No office in Thailand except one (that has a lot of its own weird rules) will ever take your passport and hold it. The offices that need time to process items will put a stamp in your passport saying your application is under consideration with a date to bring your passport back. Any agent or anyone really that wants to hold your passport overnight should be told to %{*#^{%.

(The only immigration office that will sometimes hold your passport is Jomtien)

Thank you. Do they process it there and then or will I have to leave my passport with them for a few days?

If you applied for and got a Single/Multiple Entry Tourist Visa at the Thai Embassy/Consulate before you travelled to Thailand, and were stamped in for 60 days at the entry point, You are going to go to Chaengwattana Immigration office, Government Complex Building B.

You will go here.

And you can book online

If you purchased a Thai tourist visa from your Thai Embassy or Consulate, you were stamped in for 60 days on arrival into Thailand.

You can get the 30 day extension of your stay at the CW Chaengewattana Thai Immigration office in Bangkok.

These are the common found requirements for the 30 days extension.

Be sure you have a TM30 address registration for your Address in Bangkok on file with Thai Immigration.
