Unfortunately I was never told to cancel my work permit after finishing employment in Bangkok. It has been more than one year since I stopped working for my previous employer and I’m back in America. I was wondering if it would be possible to cancel the work permit with no penalty so I can be allowed to work in Thailand in the future. I can’t find much information about this online so hope someone can help! Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about the cancellation of their work permit after more than a year of not being employed in Thailand. They seek guidance on whether they can cancel it without penalty to enable future employment in Thailand. Comments suggest that the work permit can be canceled by visiting the Ministry of Labour, and clarify that it is the individual's responsibility to manage their work permit independently of the immigration office.

EVERYONE keep in mind a work permit has NOTHING to do with the thai immigration office. It is not issued by them, it is not canceled by them and the immigration officers at the borders don't care at all about them as far as whether you canceled it or not.

Also keep in mind it is YOUR work permit with YOUR name in it and while your employer may have facilitated getting it for you they are NOT obligated in the least to cancel it when you quit working for them. It is your responsibility.

And seeing as this isn't really a thai VISA question, we're done..

Take your work permit to the Ministry of Labour where you got it issued and turn it in.
