How can I properly cancel my non-B visa and work permit while in the UK due to family health issues?

Hi everyone.

I have a non-b visa with work permit (3 months extended to 1 year, obtained in Malaysia).

I found out my Dad was unwell in hospital, so I left Thailand to visit him (with a re-entry permit) and hoped to have returned by now.

Unfortunately with stage 4 kidney failure he is not improving, therefore I wont be able to return to Thailand soon.

I was hoping for some clarity on how/if I can cancel my work permit and visa from the UK. I want to do this properly and abide by the laws.

If necessary I could try fly to Thailand, cancel them and fly out again, but of course that is a lot of money, so would avoid if possible.

Any help is really appreciated, thank you

TLDR : Answer Summary
The poster is seeking guidance on how to properly cancel their Non-B visa and work permit from the UK after leaving Thailand due to a family emergency. They have learned that they cannot cancel these permits from outside Thailand and that their employer can cancel the work permit on their behalf. The poster wants to ensure they comply with Thai immigration laws and avoid unnecessary costs.

If you look at Ellie's response to you again, Ellie states: " You still need to cancel your extension at the ' issued ' immigration office. " Hope this helps.

Best of luck.

okay thank you, I saw a couple people cancelled from a different office, so I'm wondering how they did that, I'll definitely return to Bangkok and Chiang Mai at some point, but my visa was issued in Phuket, I probably would never visit Phuket again, only for the purpose of cancellation if necessarry.

I do have 2 passports for 2 different countries, but I'm pretty sure all my information will be attached to both, and I can't return on a tourist visa on one passport, whilst cancelling the visa attached to the other.

Sorry to hear about your situation.

Unfortunately, You can't do anything with your work permit and extension from outside Thailand. Your employer can cancel only your work permit. You still need to cancel your extension at the issued immigration office.

You can cancel your extension when you travel to Thailand next time, even after it's expired. You still can travel to Thailand, no problem. You may or may not be charged for delay of cancellation, up to 20K baht. You cannot apply for a new extension until you cancel the previous one.

If possible, have your employer cancel your work permit.

Then get a termination letter (from the work) and a work permit cancellation receipt from your employer. Then bring them to the immigration office to cancel when you get the next chance to travel.

Thank you so much Ellie, so I can travel to Thailand on a standard tourist visa, or visa free entry? Do I have to cancel it at the same immigration office I extended at?

, as a rule, an extension can be cancelled only by the immigration office that issued it. No downside try another office at your convenience first. In the worst case, you may be just turned away if you go to a different office, saying "we can't". Or if you are lucky enough to have reasons for a special case, they would handle your cancellation.

You will have no issue with travelling and entering Thailand again on a Tourist Visa or visa-exempt entry regarding a pre-existing, expired extension.
