TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around whether individuals on a Special Tourist Visa (STV) can open a bank account in Thailand. Several users shared their experiences, stating that it's possible to open an account with Bangkok Bank and Krungsri Bank, although some mentioned the need for a residency certificate which can be obtained from immigration or a police station. Others argued that many banks do not require such a certificate and suggested trying different banks if initially turned down. The conversation also highlighted the varying requirements based on location and individual bank policies.

Yes. Easy, Bangkok Bank with a residence certificate and ID.

Would someone on an STV have a residenc e certificate?
anyone can get a residence certificate. It's just based on the reporting that your landlord or hotel do, telling immigration where you officially live. Most agents will get you one next day for 1500bht

Bad advice☝️. It's easy enough to do on any visa type and you don't need to pay for a certificate of residence or an agent lol. Try a different bank if at first you get turned down. Krungsri and Bangkok bank are the most foreigner friendly.

It does depend on the branch. But if you find one that will do it with a certificate of residency it can be easier just to go get the cert than spend time trying to find another that will do it without. Residency cert is I believe 500B here in CM if you want it next day (or free if you can wait a month). It's not a huge amount. Reference from a Thai person known to the bank is often an alternative, so if you have that. But if you find a bank that will do it but just needs a residency cert and you live somewhere it's relatively easy to get that (not in Bangkok) is it easier to just get that piece of paper or continue to waste time going around to find a branch that will open without it.
you do need a certificate from embassy or from police, that states you live in that specific address. This for Bkk bank. But its free at Police station. Any TR or short term visa will do.
I dont know anyone here with TR with any bank except Bangkok. All others need some sort of long term visa. Unless all this has changed from
so we are talking semantics here? Let me be candid then.
If we are talking about an official document validated by any law recognized entidy, that reiterate where is your official address for the purposes of opening a bank account, then yes, you can get it on the Police station or immigration, giving you bring your rental contract to make proof of it and copy of landlord ID with sig.
ANY bank will accept this document has a "certificate of residency".
Don't know whats your definition or maybe Im just too ignorant to know that there are other classes of certificates of residency and you are talking about something else... but I got asked for this "certificate of residency" for my drone comercial pilot license, insurances and bank account. And I got it in Krabi Police station. Paper had police logo on it and everything! 😉
So now you got me confused, dont know if i should believe in my experience in living here or belive in someone that just says its impossible. 😶
Or maybe you didnt hit the correct police station 🤷♂️
not true. I've opened up 2 accounts with krungsri with no certificate of residence and with only a few days left on my covid extension of a tourist visa.
Marcos Victorino. It is very much at the discretion of the individual branch. Some just do not like the extra paperwork and it's easier to say no, others know farangs can bring additional money into their branch and possibly push up their monthly targets. I've opened three accounts, none with certificate of residency, two wiyh showing lease and one with just a TM30 receipt. I have always taken a Thai person with me, which seems to grease the machinery a little, but again it's not absolutely necessary. Opening a bank account in Thailand is a very hit-and-miss affair and there's definitely no "one size fits all"
I came 7 years ago and in 2 years I met a lot of cashiers and techies in several banks and branches because of what I do. I remember that most of banks wouldnt just open you an account like that on a TR visa.
I acctually opened in Bkk bank that time refered by someone on SCB 🤣🤣

Travis Booth. Dumb farangs love paying thousands of baht to visa agents totally unnecessarily, and will then complain about "double pricing". I just shake my head at how much naivety there is amongst expats.
it's only done out of pure laziness and often leads to further problems down the road too.

I am on STV visa and got a bank account with Bangkok Bank. You need a residency certificate which you can get yourself with immigration but it is probably easier to get it done with a visa agent. Cost about 1500 - 1900 baht. Take this to Bangkok Bank with your passport and they will open an account.for you and you can get an ATM card.
You don't need a certificate of residency, and most immigration offices will NOT issue them unless you're on a non immigrant visa and have completed 1 90 day report.
Not so. Bangkok Bank in Kuad Suan Kaew insist on residency certificate if your on STV and you can get one from immigration as that is what I have done myself so it is not wrong.
