TLDR : Answer Summary
The recent changes in Thai banking regulations affect individuals under 50 years old, making it difficult for them to open a bank account. Many expats are sharing their experiences regarding the new rules and suggesting contacting certain visa services in Pattaya for assistance. Some commenters emphasize the benefits of having a local bank account, while others discuss potential tax implications and the legality of using agents for account openings.

Perhaps I should open an agency, become an Agent, and rip of the poor sods, who can not distinguish the entrance of a bank from a shopping mall or bakery?

I am rich in 3 days ...

I suggest you go to banks and talk to them about opening accounts. I have three accounts in the Thai Bank

Just a question on that new 50 rule. How do people buy property if they need an account? Banks now refusing?

I could not open a bank account until I bought a condo...

I transferred $ to the company I purchased the condo from.

That allowed me to open a bank account. You have to otherwise have a resident visa to open an account

So you are in your 30's, for example, with a work permit and you need an agent to open a bank account, that's taking corruption to a new level.

He does not need an Agent. Most banks would not work with an Agent. Opening bank accounts in other peoples names: is illegal. Unless it is authorized by a court, e.g. if you are seriously ill.

that's not what getting an agent means. No one is opening an account for you. The agent just has connections at a bank that will get them to let you open an account for you for a price.

True but it does go on.My bank guy,I've known for 15 years, when I asked him about people having a problem opening an account and using an agent his remark was "Money talks" he never said it didn't happen.Nothing surprises me over the 20 years I've been here.I would suggest the agent "accompanies" the person wanting an account, similar to people using agents getting visas at Immigration

I gladly pay my tax in Thailand. Seeing as Thailand and my country has a bilateral tax agreement that prevents double taxation. Most 1st world countries have some version of this.

Whatever I pay tax on in Thailand gets credited back to me in my home country after filing our taxes and show documentation that the tax has been paid in Thailand.

Rates in Thailand are better for me.

Is it an advantage getting robbed?

Still smarter than carry thousands of dollars in cash.

Just make sure you obey the 180 days rule and you don't even have to worry about tax.

And even so... how much you think they will tax me if I have 4000 dollars in my account? Not that much it will ruine me

Still better than use bank card from abroad at ATM or use WU or Wise or whatever🤷

And no ATM fees for withdrawing when I do need it.

That's correct. The banks changed their rules last week.

Unless you're 50 yrs old or above, even agents can no longer obtain bank accounts for you.

It says "Mot Services" can not do it. Strictly speaking opening bank accounts in other peoples name is - and always was (and that is the case everywhere in the civilized world) illegal. He will have no problem to do it himself.

There is no bank in the world that is rejecting a new customer who has money.

But there are plenty of banks who do not want to be burdened with "silly people".

No one needs an Agent for opening a bank account.

Other side of my apartment is Bank XYZ. I go there: they do not want me. So, which Agent makes that particular XYZ bank accepting me?

No one. There is no such agent.

Be showered, well dressed, have a friend who speaks Thai. Preferable make an appointment first. No problem to open a bank account.

What is next? He needs an Agent to buy a bottle of Soda in a super market?

It does not depend on anything. You can open a bank account with no visa, aka "visa exempt". It is the decision of the bank/branch if they accept you as a customer or not.

yes. I was speaking with Duncan, MOTS husband last week.

The banks, at least in Pattaya, will no longer entertain anybody under 50yrs old for a bank account.

It makes no difference what visa you have.

The agents cannot do anything for you
