TLDR : Answer Summary
To open a Thai bank account in preparation for a retirement visa, it's advisable to visit several banks as each may have different policies for foreigners. Many users have found success with branches such as GSB Bank and Kasikorn Bank, especially when accompanied by a Thai citizen. While some have reported easy access to banking with just a passport and minimum deposit, others suggest that joint accounts might complicate the process. Be mindful that immigration may prefer accounts in your name only, and having a significant balance may facilitate account opening.

If you bring 800k Baht to a Thai Bank, you are likely to get an account.

, given the questions being asked of late, I think you should mention that it’s bank doors you were referring to!

When it comes to immigration I believe they want you to have a Bangkok bank account in your name only????

@Jim *********
I have heard that from others as well.

They want to make sure any money in it is yours. But I think he was just referring to help opening the account. Not opening a joint account.

I guess it depends on each bank’s policy because for me all I did was go to bank in Ubon Ratchathani with passport and money for deposit and presto bank account in my name only done. No wife was with me, and paperwork simple.

@Wilmont *****
hi, can you tell me the name of the bank please. Want to do next week, thx
Wilmont ******
Agreed. Every time the wife is with me at any place doing business makes things complicated. Better by myself.

Lots of different banks, each with his own agenda regarding opening accounts for foreigners.

I suggest u Do some leg work, try a few banks and a few branches...

What finally worked for me was the GSB bank on soi siam country club, with my Thai wife co sigining the account with me...

Don't you just walk into a bank and ask to open a savings account, the same as in Bangkok?
