TLDR : Answer Summary
To open a Thai bank account in preparation for a retirement visa, it's advisable to visit several banks as each may have different policies for foreigners. Many users have found success with branches such as GSB Bank and Kasikorn Bank, especially when accompanied by a Thai citizen. While some have reported easy access to banking with just a passport and minimum deposit, others suggest that joint accounts might complicate the process. Be mindful that immigration may prefer accounts in your name only, and having a significant balance may facilitate account opening.

They want to make sure any money in it is yours. But I think he was just referring to help opening the account. Not opening a joint account.

I guess it depends on each bank’s policy because for me all I did was go to bank in Ubon Ratchathani with passport and money for deposit and presto bank account in my name only done. No wife was with me, and paperwork simple.
