How can I extend my Non-O visa in Thailand if my daughter is out of the country?

I am here on a three month non O visa to visit my Thai daughter in Chiangmai.

I previously had a one year extension of stay in Thailand on the basis of being an over 50 parent of an adult Thai child over 25. I left Thailand last year and after the visa expired returned here in January 22 on this 3 month non o visa.

I have questions about getting an extension of stay.

1. How far in advance can I go to Cmai immigration to request an extension?

2. Can I get a 60 day extension? Or a 30 day extension?

3. My daughter is currently out of the country and will not return until after my stamp expires.

Will they allow an extension in these circumstances?

Thanks in advance

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks information about extending their Non-O visa while their daughter, a Thai citizen, is currently out of the country. They inquire about the advance time for extension requests, possible extension durations (30 or 60 days), and whether having their daughter present is necessary for the extension process. Several community members respond with advice about the likelihood of receiving an extension without the daughter present, suggest visiting the immigration office in advance, and discuss potential alternatives like applying for an extension based on financial requirements.

One more question…..

If my daughter is able to come with me to immigration, can I get an extension in another province although my daughter lives in Chiangmai?

Thanks.

As a Thai she doesn’t have a TM 30. Her tabien baan is in another province. They have never asked for proof of her address. The proof we live together is only the photos they demand of us in our residence.

I will try without her here in cmai and if that doesn’t work we will go together down south…….

Thanks for all your suggestions!

Believe me

I am not trying to be a nay-sayer or 'bust your chops' in any way about the extension(s) you are attempting. I've got no dog in this fight in the least and am just offering out my take on what an immigration officer is likely to do/say in your situation.

Honestly all you can do is go and ask them and see what they tell you

If you can provide all the required documents there, including proof of living with her long-term there (address with TM30 matching her address, etc)

just curious, how could you apply for a 60 day visit family extension or the one based on being over 50 and being cared for by your half thai child when that child doesn't stay at the same address ?

The people you need to be talking to are the IMMIGRATION OFFICE where you are and where you'd be getting the extension. There's not a person on this group that could do more than give you an educated guess of what they really will say when you talk to them.

she does stay at the same address as me in chiangmai. Do you think it is possible to get the 60 day visit family extension from a province in the south?

you need to head on over to the immigration office and speak to an officer, NOT one of those lackey volunteers that are outside.

IF I was a betting man I'd say NO you can't get a visit thai family extension <- because the thai family you're visiting isn't even IN the country and that's the reason they issue that extension for 😕

It's the same reason as you can't get the "I need my adult thai child to be my caregiver" yearly extension. Your caregiver isn't even IN the country.

I think you got one choice and that's IF you have 800K baht in a thai bank account in your name only for the last 2 months and just apply for a year extension based on regular retirement.

I don't see any other extension option open to you.

BUT

you definitely need to go talk to the immigration office WELL in advance of your current 90 day stamp expiring so you can make a plan <- even if that plan is to exit/re-enter the country 😕 Good luck with it

to visit my adult Thai daughter

, you need your daughter in person with you at the immigration office when you apply for your extension for the same reason.

Is that written on your visa?

I realize that, but last year when I wanted to extend my one year visa (based on her supporting me) while she was away they offered me a month extension and I could come back with my daughter when she returned to renew for another year. This year I do not have the one year just the 3 month visit family.

last year, there was a Covid extension, but I'm afraid it is no longer available for Non-Immigrant visa holders...

Visit the immigration office earlier and talk about what option you would have while preparing for plan B..

You either had an extension based on being over 50 (where you showed proof of funds to get)

OR

you had an extension that you're over 50 and you have an adult thai child taking care of you (which has no financial requirements).

I'd wager seeing as you get that "I'm over 50 and I need my adult half thai child to care for me" extension by having your child here caring for you that you're not gonna be able to get it this time around with her out of the country 😮 but that's just a guess .. (but an educated one)

Your choice is to go to the immigration office and ask them what you do IF you want to get that "I need my child to care for me" extension OR meet the financial requirements and just get the regular "I'm over 50" retirement extension this time.

In Chiang Mai you can apply for an extension when you have 45 days or less left on your current stamp, the extension is added to your expiration date so you don't lose any days going early.

You can apply once for a 60 day Extension of Stay to visit family

OR

for an 1 year Extension of Stay based on being over 50 years of age.

Being a family members is only for children up to 20 years of age.
