How can I extend my Non-O Retirement Visa to one year if I must apply 30 days before it expires?

Non O Retirement visa extension advice.

I received my Non-O Retirement Visa on the same day I applied. The visa expires 90 days from the date of approval.

To extend it to 1 year, I understand I need to open a Thai bank account and maintain 800k THB in the account for 2 months. However, the local immigration office in Thailand has informed me that the extension application must be submitted 30 days before the 90-day visa expiry.

Practically, how is this possible unless I fly to Thailand immediately on the same day the visa is approved?

Is there any possibility of getting a 1-month extension before applying for the 1-year extension?

Would appreciate hearing about any similar experiences or suggestions. Thanks in advance.
Answer summary
The discussion revolves around extending a Non-O Retirement Visa in Thailand, specifically the confusion surrounding the 90-day visa validity and the process to obtain a one-year extension. The original poster (OP) highlights a misunderstanding about the timing of the visa and stay permit. Comments clarify that the visa is valid for entry for 90 days from approval, and once in Thailand, a 90-day stay permit is issued, which can be extended. The extension application must be submitted at least 30 days before the stay permit expires, with proof of 800,000 THB maintained in a Thai bank account for at least 2 months before applying. The conversation emphasizes the need for clear understanding of visa types and the immigration process.

Agree, best clarification ever. One other question if you please, the embassy website makes a statement " if the applicant doesn't have a valid Visa or re-entry permit, he must apply within 15 days before travel. " Is this a separate document from the non-immigrant o that I must apply for?

There must have been a misunderstanding about the 30 days issue

Can apply for extension of stay when there is 30 days or less remaining but not before.

„the local immigration office in Thailand has informed me that the extension application must be submitted 30 days before the 90-day visa expiry”

*** Thai Immigration and their terribly bad grasp of English!

*** when you enter you get stamped in for a 90-days stay permit

*** the “visa” cannot expire anymore after you entered, because the visa became invalid when you entered and cannot get “extended”)

The only thing that “expires” is your 90-days stay permit

*** UP FROM 30 days before your 90-days stay permit expires, you can apply for the “1-year extension of the stay permit”.

On the day of Application, you must prove with the bank letter that you have a minimum of 800,000 THB in your Thai bank account since TWO MONTHS.

***Practically, this means you have about one week or two weeks maximum after you have entered Thailand, to get the bank account opened and the money transferred into it from your home bank account

Within the last 30 days, not exactly 30 days. Most Immigration Offices won't let you you apply for the extention of stay untill you have 30 days or less left on your current permission to stay.

this is a very commonly happening misconception. Many Thai embassies, but sadly not all of them, are warning about this on their websites. I don't blame the OP, I'd rather blame the Thai embassies for their neglection to explain it

Can you list the things you needed just for the Non o immigrant visa? Also did you need a criminal check?

Marco Antonio Cuevas The website of the Embassy approving your application will have details of their specific requirements (usually) and you apply here

Your visa is valid for 90 days from approval meaning you have 90 days to arrive in Thailand. Upon arrival you will be stamped in for a further 90 days with day being the day you arrive. Then you have to go about getting the bank account and funds in place and seasoned etc for the 12 month extension.

There's a lot of misunderstandings here.

Once an embassy issues a non-O visa, it must be used to enter Thailand within 90 days. Your permission to stay is completely separate. Once you arrive in Thailand, you'll receive an entry stamp for 90-days that starts from the day you arrive.

Most immigration offices allow you to apply for an extension when you have 30 days or less left on your existing permission to stay. You don't have to apply when you have 30 days left, you can apply at any point from 30 days left until the last day.

There is no possibility of getting any extension except the 1-year extension, unless you have a Thai spouse or Thai child.

You visa is for 90 days from the day you enter Thailand.
Graham ******

Stuart Levy No, the Non-O visa is valid for 90 days from the date of issue, if you enter Thailand on any of those 90 days you get a 90 day permitted to stay stamp
Stuart ******

Graham Seal that's what I said. I know that and told him that.

Stuart Levy that's not what you initially said. You wrote "Your visa is for 90 days from the day you enter Thailand" . . . . this is nonsense, because the visa becomes invalid when he entersThailand on it. The visa is valid to enter for 90 days from the date it got issued, but when you enter, all you get is a 90-days" admitted stay until" stamp - which is a "stay permit", not a visa
Stuart ******
Stuart ******
Graham Seal okay wording wrong. I do understand as soon as you enter you have 90 days. Thanks for pointing it out.
Graham ******

Stuart Levy but the visa is used and finished the day it is used to enter Thailand not valid for 90 days from that date, that is the permitted to stay stamp, completely different

Stuart Levy Thanks for your reply. It's clearly mentioned in my visa that it is valid from 8th May 2026 and valid until 5th August 2026.

BorderlessRetiree that's the dates you have to use it by to enter Thailand. Once you enter you have 90 day's.
BC ********
BC ********
BorderlessRetiree one period of time is the validity within which you have to use it (which you have the dates already), another period is the time it gives you at the moment you use it (which starts yhe day you enter Thailand). By coincidence both are 90 days.
John **********

BorderlessRetiree the validity of the visa is for 90 days from the date of issue. That means you have to enter Thailand between those dates BUT when you do enter you will be stamped in for 90 days. The validity and the time you get stamped in for are not related.

Christopher John Hanna why it is nonsense?? it is too clear to understand it. I think, that Thai authorities have many nonsense things but this case never.

Christopher John Hanna there is confusion because of the correct terminology. Each time someone corrects wrong terminology it is laughed away with "we all know what is meant" until there is a case that they don't know what the correct terminology means and creates confusion.

Todd McGowan he said that's what it states on the visa. It is probably the case, it was the same for me. I lost almost a month of the three months due to this nonsense by immigration
