I'm on the last 17 days of a 90 day retirement visa. My personal circumstances have changed and I am able to request an extension for my retirement visa. But I think it's too late. I haven't opened a bank account, and everything I'm reading shows that I need at least 30 days left on my visa to open one. Not to mention I'm only 17 days away from my visa expiring. So not likely to get an appointment with immigration.

I did reach out to a recommended agent who said they would be able to help me. But will they really be able to help me? I don't hear from them until sometime tomorrow. So I'm a bit on pins and needles wondering how they could make this happen.

This is all pretty new to me, so please be gentle. 😊
Answer summary
The user is close to the expiration of a 90-day retirement visa and is seeking to extend it but faces several obstacles, including the requirement of having a bank account opened 30 days prior to the extension application and the necessity of having 800,000 THB in the account for at least 2 months. Although they have contacted an agent for assistance, they are unsure of the agent's effectiveness given the tight timeline. Responses from the community suggest exploring immediate actions such as opening a bank account, border runs to apply for a new visa, or seeking support from immigration and various agents.

Yeah unless you have the cash to pay people to bypass the minimum amount of time then you probably have to leave.

I had overstayed on a visa free entry by 3 days and they sent me to Cambodia for an hour and I got a 3 month visa.

Then decided I would like to stay and obtained a retirement visa before that one got lower than 30 days.

Can you get a 3 month visa and do it that way?

I had a similar circumstance. I couldn't do the marriage Visa I wanted. I recommend you open the bank account immediately. You can border bounce and get a 60 day Visa exempt. That will get you the seasoning time. When you return from the border bounce convert to A retirement Visa. Once your money has been seasoned, apply for the extension

Don’t go and pay an agent … go to immigration office and ask for a 60 day extension 🤷‍♂️

Penny Nave 60 days is not long enough, even if they did grant an extension. They need to bank 800,000 baht for 2 months, so 1 month plus 17 days is not long enough.

If I were in your situation, I would go to your immigration office and ask them what they suggest you do. You could get a certificate of residence while you are there and then go open a bank account and deposit the ฿800K, leave the country and get another O non immigrant visa based on retirement or just re enter on a currently 60 visa exempt and apply to change visa types in Thailand. You will need to have the ฿800,000 in your account and get a letter and bank statement, your landlord’s Thai ID, chanote title and lease. Application in duplicate, at least at the Phuket office. After you have the bank account for at least 60 days and a valid non immigrant O visa, you can apply for a one year extension of permission to stay in the Kingdom.

I had a delay getting my bank account, Hat Yai immigration accepted my paperwork and then extended me 1 month so they could complete their checks. I was given the Visa extension in January just before the 1 month ran out, but backdated to when my initial 90 Visa ran out

Maybe worth waiting go back to your home country first. Check out the tax implications of staying in the country long term, health insurance etc It is hard to tell from your question how much experience you have had of Thailand but a short pause might give you time to do things in a more planned and considered manner. All the best

HappyTurkey1590 Plus, Thailand does have a generous allowance. If my husband brought in taxable 15k USD, his tax liability would only be $150 due to my daughter and I being dependents. And any taxes we pay in the states, we can offset here in Thailand.

HappyTurkey1590 Most people pay no taxes because of treaties between their countries and Thailand regarding taxing their pensions. For example, Thailand cannot tax SS for the US.

are you asking this question so you can then tell him "you should have done something earlier"

I actually cannot think of an act more worthless than the question you just asked.

Does it give you a chubby pointing out the obvious?

yes, leave and start over, apply for te 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa outside of Thailand. But DON'T FORGET: before you leave, get a Thai bank account opened in your name. Preferably Kasikorn or SCB. You will need it in case you fail to get a 90-days Non-Imm-O visa issued outside of Thailand. Because in this case could re-enter Thailand visa-exempt and apply for the "change of visa type" inside Thailand from the touristic entry to the initial 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa on Immigration, by showing 800,000 THB already sitting in your already existing Thai bank account, and by showing a rental contract. And the proof that the money came from abroad. Do not ignore this. Get your account opened, you NEED a minimum of 800,000 THB sitting in it since 2 months, if you want to get issued the 1-year extension of the stay permit based on retirement

🙈Not proud.

Honestly it really wasn't something I was considering. I ended up falling in love with this place and also suddenly my life circumstances are now allowing me to do it.

But I think I need to leave and start over.

it happens I just helped a guy do the same move. But he's been researching for yrs the ins and outs and had everything sorted. He did get an agent to handle everything once he landed. He got visa approved prior to leaving Australia. And now he his just waiting to do his 90 day run. Go back to your agent I'm sure you'll get help with an agent now without heading all the way back good luck

Use the 17 days to open a bank account, then go to a neighbouring country and apply for another non-O. Return to Thailand and deposit 800,000 straight away so that you can extend your stay legally.

But yes I believe you need at least 30 days left on your current stamp in Thailand

You need the money in a Thai bank 2 months before you can apply for the extension so you certainly aren't going to be doing it yourself. On the off chance you're married to a Thai you can get a 60 day extension based on "visiting Thai family" which would give you the time for the money to season.

You can apply up until the last day, but you cannot obtain a legitimate extension unless you have had 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account for the required two months, or can provide an income affidavit from your embassy.

An agent may be able to work around the process, but that does not change the formal requirements for a legitimate stay.
