Hi everyone,

Could you please help

Me with a 1 year Non O retirement vis question.

The below is from the Thai Embassy webpages in London, UK.

Is this an either or situation?

I have the £18,000 in the bank . . .

but, as I’m not working currently I don’t have £1,500 going into my account every month for the last 3 months.

I’m hoping it’s an either or and not both.

I would really welcome any advice or knowledge you guys have.
Answer summary
The discussion revolves around the eligibility criteria for a 1-year Non-O retirement visa in Thailand. Users clarify that for this visa type, early applications outside Thailand are based on financial proofs, such as having either a lump sum of £18,000 or a monthly income of 65,000 THB for three months. Once in Thailand, to extend the visa, a minimum of 800,000 THB must be maintained in a Thai bank account for two months before applying for the extension. Key points include the distinction between the Non-O and Non-OA visas, the application process from outside Thailand, and the necessity of establishing a Thai bank account post-arrival.

Non O and Non OA visa DIFFERENCE

Since October 2023, the Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa is only available as a 90-days single entry visa. When you enter Thailand, you get stamped in for a 90-days admitted stay.

For the 1-year Extension of Temporary Stay Permit out of this 90-days stay permit, one can obtain a multiple entry permit on Immigration. This re-entry permit allows you to exit and re-enter Thailand during the 1-year stay permit as many times as you wish.

*** The alternative would be the 365-days multiple entry Non-Imm-O/A Longstay Visa.

This visa however comes with a mandatory health insurance, a police record check and a medical health certificate.

The Non-O/A Longstay Visa can only be applied for in your home country (i.e. the country of your official residence).

You need a financial proof of a minimum of 800,000 THB equivalent in your country's currency in your home bank account.

The only advantage is that within the first 2 years, you can leave the financial proof of 800K in your home bank account. You don’t need to show money in a Thai bank.

But as soon as you switch to the annual 1-year Extension of the Stay Permit, the financial proof must be made inside Thailand.

From the extension onward, the mandatory health insurance must be a tgia-listed private Thai health insurance (you could argue the true value of such contracts). And you need a minimum of 800,000 THB in your Thai bank account. On the day you apply, this money must have seasoned for 2 months.

Alternatively you could supply an income affidavit of your embassy over a monthly 65,000 THB income.

In case your embassy does not issue such affidavits anymore (these are the US,UK, Australian, Canadian and Norwegian embassies) you should ask your Immigration if they accept a 12-months bank statement over the consecutive monthly transfer from abroad of a minimum of 65,000 THB, month for month not missing a single month.

*** The 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa has no mandatory health insurance requirement, and no such police and medical checks requirements.

It only requires you to get a Thai bank account opened ASAP after entering Thailand and getting stamped in for 90 days, and transfer a minimum of 800,000 THB into it, because you need proof this money has been sitting in your account for 2 months in order to apply for the 1-year Extension of Stay Permit Based on Retirement (at least in the first year)

*** For people who wish to relocate for a planned Longstay in Thailand, I recommend to start on the Non-O (without the “A”) Visa, because on this visa you keep your freedom of choice regarding the health insurance.

People who plan to go back to their home countries every second year, and apply for the next Non-Imm-O/A Longstay Visa, it could be the alternative to keep a worthy foreign health insurance and leave their money in their home banks.

The Non-O/A visa gets you stamped in for a 365-days stay permit - but maximum only as long as your health insurance is worth for.

If you exit and re-enter Thailand during the first 1-year visa validity, you will always get stamped in for another 365-days, but respectively only for the duration of your health insurance.

That's why many applicants to the Non-O/A visa, will sign an insurance contract for two full years from the start, as this will be noted on the .pdf visa document of the Thai embassy, and every Immigration officer at the borders will acknowledge it and stamp you in accordingly.

There is no 1 year non-o visa. You will apply for a 90-day visa showing either of the two funding methods. Then you will go to Thailand season the 800K in a Thai bank account in your name only and apply for the one year extension after 2 months of seasoning.

Scott Powell yes, which requires you buy health insurance that is approved for Thailand for as long as you hold that visa. If you re-enter your permission to stay is based on how much longer your health insurance covers you, not another full year, unless you have extended your coverage. You also need a print of of your police record and a health certificate with your application along with the finacial requirements.

Yes, extended yearly.

Scott Powell I'm now over 70 and insurance is hard to find at my age and it does not cover any pre-exisiting conditions. I self insure here and I have Medicare still in the US as I own a home there as well. I'have had O-A visas before insuance was required, then O based on marriage before they stopped accepting our marriage certificate, now a lot more paperwork involved than retirement and since I have had bank accounts here for 20 years, I entered in January on a tourist exempt entry and applied for a visa type change to an O based on retirement then appled for a one year extension of permission to stay. I was in the US for 20 months last to have a hip replacement surgery done, then had to wait at least 4 months after surgery to be able to fly long haul due to deep leg thrombosis concerns from the surgery and awaiting another test before I was cleared for travel in the middle of December and the holidays. I booked our flight for January 1 as it was a good price and didn't have time to do a visa since the conslate was closed for Chritmas and NY.

Jim McGowan That's not all exactly true, re entering has nothing to do with your health insurance. However your extensions will need to be applied for with a one year policy in place, which is pretty easy to do.

Scott Powell insurance is more than that. In the US they require a state DOJ print out I thiink now. It's changed over the years. At first I could just get one from my county courthouse, then it was the FBI, now I believe it's the California DOJ. Also sometimes the doctor's visit isn't covered either. I gave up on O-A's years ago. Now I am back on an extension of permission to stay for one year based on retirement tied to a non-immigrant O visa that was also based on retirement. If you go that route, you get an O in your country and as soon as possible open a Thai bank account and deposit ฿800K as it needs to be in your account for a minimum two months before you can apply for the one year extension of stay.

Scott Powell its either but first year means ฿800,000 in a bank do apply for the NON O in your home country. Then fly to Thailand, season your ฿800,000 in your thai account and apply for your 12-month extension.
Scott ********

OP
Can you extend year on year with this method Phil do you know?
Phil ******

Scott Powell at this moment after your first 12-month extension based on retirement is nearly finished you can extend again for ฿1900. But now they want copy of the TM 30, photos of you inside your home, photos of you outside your home and a GPS coordinate your home as well as the normal documents. Apparently its changing again....
Graeme ******

Scott Powell you can extend the non O extension year on year as long as you continue to meet the extension requirements

Why do you suggest not applying for the Non O in the UK Phil?

Have I misunderstood this this? I thought I could get the 1 year direct from UK before I go.

Kinda lost now 🤦🏻‍♂️

Sorry Phil - re read - my bad you said ‘do’ apply,

Scott Powell when I was in Thailand and worried I couldn’t get a second 60 days by a border run, I inquired about getting a non O retirement visa while in Thailand. Immigration told me repeatedly that I had to apply outside the county and prove I was outside Thailand with an accommodation receipt or last exit stamp. Guys correct me if you’ve had other experiences. Even the visa agents said the same and could not help.

I ended up going to Laos for 48 hours and got another 60 visa free stamp, and an eventual 30 day extension. I was sweating it for sure

Sad those days of long visa free stays appear gone due to all the abuse.

@Scott *******
there are a number of different visas all referred to as retirement visas.

The Non-O visa is a 90 day visa which you obtain in the UK but then extend inside Thailand

The Non-OA visa is a 12 month visa out of the box but comes with additional requirements such as insurance, medical and police checks.

Apply for the one that suits you best

Scott Powell there is no 1 yr non-o.

It would be a 90 day non-o visa based on being over 50, which then can be extended 1 yr in Thailand only.

There is a one year OA visa available that have requirements including health insurance, not the preference for most people.

Leigh Griffiths I think you will find it's for a Non O visa which is 90 days. Once you arrive in Thailand you have to open a bank account and mature the money for 2 months then apply for a extension.
