Answer summary
The user is looking for advice on how to stay in Thailand until March 15th after their retirement visa expires on January 25, 2027. Comments from the community suggest multiple options: renewing the current retirement visa for 1,900 baht, potentially applying for a 30-day extension after leaving Thailand, or discussing the possibility of obtaining a different visa upon leaving and re-entering. The key considerations involve the user's intentions regarding their future visits and the financial requirements for visa extensions.

Renew your current visa; it costs only 1,900 and requires a few documents, and you can leave after three months if that is your plan.

Do you happen to have Thai family (wife or child) which would allow you to get the 60 day visit Thai family extension?

You have a retirement extension, expiring Jan. 25, 2027.

The key question is: Is that an agent-assisted extension, or an extension you did yourself and for which you met the financial requirements?

If agent-assisted, then the costs of extending it again should be weighed against the costs of leaving the country and spending at least a few days outside (and leaving by air is recommended), and returning here visa exempt (30 days) and subsequently getting a 30-day extension vs. the costs of getting another agent-assisted retirement extension. Maybe getting another agent-assisted extension is the most convenient approach.

If you are handling your retirement extension yourself and meet the financial requirements, then it would be best to just get another one-year extension. That will also be far less costly than the other options. Plus it will open another year for you to come-and-go as you please, as long. as you have a re-entry permit(s).

You also would have the option of 'killing off' the extension when you return to Japan in March by not getting a re-entry permit. Which means you wouldn't have to concern yourself with the financial requirements of that extension. And which also means future visits here would be of the visa-exempt type, or from an e-visa should you acquire one from the Thai embassy/consulate in Japan.

Visit another country and return to Thailand Feb 01, apply for a 30 day extension at the end of Feb, return to Japan at the end of your 30 day extension. Good decision on returning to Japan for medical care, much better and less expensive. When you visit Thailand during the year, after your first 30 days, get a 30 day extension and return to Japan at the end. Easy to make the two month visits with the extension.

If you plan to return to Thailand within the following year, the best option is to renew your visa, which will cost you 1,900 baht. Otherwise, if you do not return to Thailand within the next year, you will need to leave the country and re-enter using either a visa exemption (with an extension) or a tourist visa.

I decided to go back home for health reasons, and I get almost 100% medical bill coverage from my government insurance. I will only visit for about 2 months of the year in Thailand. Thank you sir

Chang Wada So, if your retirement visa expires in January and you wish to stay until March, immigration will not grant you an extension; you must therefore leave Thailand and re-enter using either a visa exemption or a tourist visa.

Is there any reason why you do not wish to renew?

We charge 14,000 thb for fully supported yearly renewals, and can even submit for you now giving you 14 months without losing days.

Prices actually dropped a few months ago, from around 16,000 THB to 14,000 THB. If you hold a passport from an eligible country and already have an existing retirement extension, now is a great time to take advantage of the lower rate.

The alternative is to leave Thailand and return, but that would mean starting the entire process from scratch, which can end up being significantly more expensive.

You have to leave and apply for a different visa

There is no best bet. If you don't get an extension you have to leave Thailand by the date your current extension expires.

You could try re-entering either visa exempt and get an extension or applying for a 60 day tourist visa before re-entering

He will not get tourist visa after retirement visa 99%. Visa-exempt is possible with border-run bus company only. Any case it is more easy to get new Re 1 year ext.
