When applying for a re-entry permit does the date I'm leaving Thailand have to be exact? I haven't confirmed my flight yet so I don't know exactly what date I'm flying but I'd like to get my re-entry permit sorted asap

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a re-entry permit in Thailand, the departure date does not need to be exact. Many expats have successfully obtained their permits upon leaving, often at the airport just before going through passport control. The re-entry permit can be used anytime as long as the 'admitted to stay' stamp is valid.

It doesnt matter. The re entry permit can be used anytime your 'admitted to stay' stamp is valid.
, it depends on your visa. For some visa types, yes, like visa extensions. For others, the admitted-to-stay date will be updated. This counts for Elite Visa and others. For visa extensions, your next-notification-of-address date will be updated.

No it does not have to be exact. Also... yes... easy to get at airport before you go through passport control.

I got a re-entry permit at the airport on my way through customs on the day of travel. No need to do anything prior to that. This happened on April 18th 2021.
This counter is to the left of the normal line of immigration counters, in that area NO Photos. However it's well sign posted. I just asked an immi officer and he pointed me in the right direction. The whole airport is pretty much deserted, including immigration, so when I went into that area I was one of only a handful of people. Immigration staff outnumbered customers, so they tend to be much more human than normal, even helpful, so you'll have no problem if you just tell them you want a re-entry permit before going thru the gate.
