You don't need ANY date. I recently left Thailand without any return booked as I'm unsure exactly when I will return. Bought my re-entry permit at Korat immigration before leaving.

A re-entry permit is valid until your visa, or visa extension expires, and can be used from the time you purchase it. If you leave the country without a re-entry permit your visa or visa extension expires as soon as immigration stamps you out.

I also got my multiple re-entry permit when I did my first ever extension a few weeks ago. Do I have to consider anything special at the airport when I leave the country?

But when you return be sure to put the number of the re-entry permit on your arrival card (TM6).

Yes, great advice. Plus check to see what permission to stay date you receive while you are still in front of the Immigration Officer. It should be the same as the date on your re-entry permit. If not, it's easier to correct the mistake while you are still in front of the officer.

Nope. Buy it at the same time as getting an extension. Use it anytime prior to your new “allowed to stay” date. Or buy it at the airport on your way out. Doesn’t matter which. Or anytime in between for that matter.
