Does the 20,000 baht cash requirement apply to those re-entering Thailand with an active METV?

Apologies, another question about the infamous 20k baht requirement on entering...

Does this apply for an already active METV when you bounce out and in for another 60 day stamp?

Thanks 😄

TLDR : Answer Summary
The 20,000 baht requirement applies to all entrants into Thailand, including those with an already active Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV). However, whether this requirement is enforced often depends on the discretion of the immigration officer. It's noted that while theoretically, proof of funds can be requested, it has become increasingly common to encounter questioning at immigration. Preparing to show proof, such as cash or traveler’s cheques, is recommended, although not all travelers are asked to present this upon entry.

The rules are plain, they've been rules for MANY years, and they're only now being very sporadically enforced <- as in once in a great while.

I say that because on any given day thousands of people enter thailand by air and land, yet only a few (under a dozen) have been denied entry.

True those southern border crossings were extorting 200baht a person to stamp you into thailand BUT that was so you didn't have to meet the financial requirements.

I think this is much ado about nothing, FEW people are questioned, even fewer are denied entry. My advice, have the cash on hand, ESPECIALLY if you've got several tourist visas and or visa exempt entries in your passport.

Byron Ch-sri you're right, and indeed very few people have been singled out and questioned compared to how many actually enter the country on a given day. The airports in bangkok and the southern land borders seem the be the places that question people IF they're gonna get questioned.

Thanks Tod 🙂. I think I'll go with the travellers cheques option - I'm happier carrying those around!

It's not an issue of having the money, it's more that I don't want to wander around with 20k on me as I feel that might leave me vulnerable. I had to prove I had money in order to get the visa (£5k). I have a condo rental as well, and wasn't sure what would happen if they asked for the money and I didn't have it on me!

Ron Angel No thanks. Thailand isn't that perfect for me.

There is NO visa for medical reasons, you're right. There is an extension of stay for one though (after you're already here on either a visa exempt stamp or a tourist visa stamp). I know the bigger hospitals in bangkok offer it (especially Bumrungrad). It requires a pile 'o paperwork but it can be done. I'd check with some of the bigger hospitals

There is soon to be a visa exactly for you. The new 10yr visa specially marketed for medical tourism. Just put 3 million baht in a bank account here and you'll be all set for 10yrs. Problem solved.

Todd, How do I do that, nowhere on the website is this mentioned. I searched and saw the former medical visa was done away with. My issue is I'm trying to follow the rules but there's nothing offered for me. It's tiring bouncing around when you're not well. Again it's not easy for everyone, I struggle with bank account fees since I can't open a bank account here. Hell, I'm paying rent minding my own business. I find people that know all the ins and outs of the information forget not everyone fits a mold. I am don't like relying on stamps I prefer the 60 day visas however that didn't work out so well last time. I only have three in and put to be clear. I've not been here that long but it's a hassle each time to renew. So I am considering other options Thailand isn't right for everyone. I prefer straightforward consistent things not rules/laws that can change at a whelm. Maybe that's just me. Like they say we all have a choice I am not into jumping hoops or being stressed out about today I may get questioned by IO because they think I'm here too long.

@LaMec*****
, you can get extensions of stays based on medical needs for up to 90 days at a time at the immigration office for 1900baht.

If you're using 30 day visa exempt entries to facilitate your stay here at some point you're gonna get called on the carpet. That's just how it is.

That isn't how it looks considering the horror stories we have been hearing. Either way it's hard to stay long term if you're not in one of their boxes. I'm here for medical tourism there's no visa for that. I'm on ssdi so definitely not working but I'm not 50 or looking to marry a Thai citizen, study or invest. Its not always black and white so what visa am I supposed to be on. If they don't like you actually staying longer without being on one the visas they put out for long term? Everyone can tell others what they think they should do but not everyone's story is the same. I will still be anxious and stressed when I leave and enter after all this drama. It doesn't feel Thailand really wants medical tourism. So as I said I can move along to a more welcoming country.

all that Thailand is asking you to be here on the correct visa.
LaMechelle ********
I'm the same way. I don't carry that much around nor do I like to especially since I was traveling in Malaysia but I had drama in Penang. My luck I'd not get it and have trouble landing in Thailand. I'm a worrier with anxiety issues so trust me when I say this bothers me. When I have to fly out again I will stress again. I'm seriously thinking of moving on to another country since visa rules are getting tighter.
LaMechelle ********
I flew back in from Penang Tuesday night, after being in queue for about 30 minutes, a lady got pulled from the Booth next to mine and questioned by a few IOs before being escorted off. I didn't get asked for the 20,000 baht just how long I plan to stay. I have several free entry stamps an one tourist visa in my passport. I was a little nervous since I had a bad issue with Thai consulate in Penang this week, so I had it with me just in case. Better safe than sorry nowadays!

just bring it you'll spend it anyways, just keep an eye on your wallet.

David, I don't see how you'd need it.
David ************
Just play it safe in my opinion. I'm on a retirement extension of stay and I don't think I need it, but I will definitely have it on hand.

All depends on the officer. Some insist that it is cash

Are travellers cheques considered acceptable everywhere? I'd be happier carrying 40k worth of them rather than cash when leaving every 60 days (there are two of us).
Joe ******
Traveller cheques are the best way to carry "Cash". You don't even need to use them but always good to have "500 US$ emergency funds" with you.
Alex *********
used to be rare. now it is quite common
Alex *********
Ok
Steve *******
It's still very rare. Three or four reports on social media doesnt make it "quite common".
Steve *******
In theory the IO can ask anyone entering the country for 'proof of funds'. However it's extremely rare that they do.
Joe ******
Down to the custom officer if he want's to see it or not.
