TLDR : Answer Summary
A US citizen entering Thailand on a 6-month Multi-Entry Tourist Visa (METV) may be asked by immigration officers to show proof of funds, which is typically 20,000 Thai baht or its equivalent in cash. Although not explicitly required for METV, it is advisable to carry this amount to avoid any issues at entry, as immigration officers have the discretion to request proof of funds from any traveler.
and now I think the O/P knows that ANYONE can be asked for proof of funds (20K baht or the equivalent in CASH) when stamping into the country and that it's better to be prepared and not asked than to be asked and not have it. ;)
For any reason, a Thai Immigration Officer can ask any foreigner to show proof that you can afford to stay here, and that means 20,000 thb or the equivalent in any currency. Cash. If they ask and you don't show the money, they can refuse you entry at their discretion. Easy as that.
