TLDR : Answer Summary
The requirement to show 20,000 baht when re-entering Thailand after a border run with a multiple entry Non-O visa is not a strict rule but can vary by immigration officer discretion. Many long-term visa holders report never being asked for cash during re-entry. It's advised to carry the cash just in case you encounter an immigration officer who may request it, but experiences suggest that it is unlikely, especially at the Mae Sai border.

Mae Sai I have never heard of a report of them asking. They won't let you out unless they are going to let you back in, so if they do say they will need it, you could withdraw it in Mae Sai. But they don't ask.

That is correct.

No proof of anything needed in Mae Sai border run, no matter which visa you are on. The "proof of" is border dependent and NOT country dependent.

I've held a non O spouse visa/extension for 3 years and never been asked on re entry (9 times) .
But I've always had the cash on me just in case , because nothing surprises me.
It's not a requirement but if you end up in a debate with an IO about it they will go into face saving mode and you'll get nowhere arguing. Just carry it anyway.

Sometimes you'll get a newbie IO who thinks they know everything. Happened to me on a re entry. I flew out and in on same day(90day req) on my o visa and the IO didnt understand. He called a senior guy over who told him it's fine and waved me through. Some of them go on a power trip.

No one could actually give you a definite answer as it’s up to the immigration officer you give your passport to. ANYONE on ANY visa COULD in theory be asked. In practice it would be VERY unusual for a long term visa holder to be asked.

They can ask anyone but much less likely on a non O. I doubt he has any mark on the computer, this is something the southern border is known to do. You are "meant" traditionally to put 200B in your passport (only 2MYR ok for Malaysians) so they don't ask you.
I carried it out with me a few years ago when they first started this nonsense. Was stolen, which was nice.

There is no reason why you would need to have cash to enter in on a long term visa, but it’s in the rules that they could ask for proof of funds. Cover your a** and have it in case.

Stuart Cumming the reason I am asking is i had a problem at the Malaysia border 2 months ago and was warned that next time I will not be allowed back in Thailand without proof of funds. At Padang Besar
