Just a quick question please. If I come to Thailand on a normal tourist visa say 30 days, then pop to Japan for say a week, then return - do my 7 days extend my Thailand stay by 7 days? Sorry if it's not 100% clear

TLDR : Answer Summary
When you leave Thailand for a week and then return, you effectively reset your visa duration. If you are a tourist from the UK, you can enter Thailand on a visa-exempt basis and typically will receive either 30 or 60 days upon re-entry. Therefore, going to Japan for a week and returning to Thailand should allow you to receive another entry with the full duration allotted, provided you have not abused visa exemptions in the past.
Normal tourist visa is 60 days. If it’s a single entry visa then if you leave then your visa is over. You need a new visa to enter again. Or could make use of the visa exemption if you are travelling on a passport that qualifies.
I am Canadian. I can go visa exempt for 60 then get 30 day extension. Or apply for a 3 month visa. The first is easier and very common and often done. Have all your paper work and 1900 baht and a few hours being extended and it is easy.
You used to only be able to get 60 days expense. (30 and 30 day extension). So ppl would get 3 month tourist visa.
If you are from a visa exempt country, you can go 90 days legit quit an actual visa.
This person isn’t asking about extending via border runs. They are wondering if there time resets when they leave. Which it does. But not the best way to do it. I think she wants to visit Japan. Not doing it for an extension.
You appear to be from the UK so if you hold a British passport you don't need a visa at all to enter Thailand, you can enter on what is called a visa exempt entry. Currently that gives you the same time in Thailand as a tourist visa, so 60 days, when you exit and return you could potentially get another visa exempt entry.
If you came on a 60 days exemption, then travelled to Japan for any days, when you are back to Thai you get another 60 days visa exempt. Unless you have a history of border bouncing.
JD Uttley, am I right in thinking you are from the UK? If so you don’t need a visa as a tourist you’ll get your 60 or 30 days depending what happens. When you fly out and fly back in you’ll get your 30 or 60 days again. As long as you are a genuine tourist, you’ll have no issues.
If you enter with visa exemption, you’ll get a new visa exemption upon entry. If you need to apply for a visa with the embassy then it will depend whether you have a single or multiple entry visa. If you have a single entry visa then you’ll need to reapply to reenter Thailand if you are required to pre apply for a visa
