Can I leave Thailand after extending my visa-exempt visit and re-enter without issues?

Please clarify a 30 day extension to a 60 day visa exempt visit to Thailand scenario . If I arrive at BKK on October 1 I will be stamped for 60 days until November 29. If I go to Vietnam during this time, and come bacK to BKK and get a 30 day extension until December 29 , can I simply change flights and depart Thailand and go back to America on December 29 with no issues ? Thanks in advance for your advice..k

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual inquired about the possibility of extending a 60-day visa-exempt visit to Thailand by leaving for Vietnam and returning to Thailand. The responses clarified that upon returning to Thailand, they would receive a new 60-day entry stamp rather than an extension of their current visa. Therefore, they could leave Thailand and return to the U.S. without issues, as long as they follow immigration procedures.

Thanks Bent . I read this stuff every day and thought we only got 30 once we returned.. I appreciate the knowledge.👍

The whole idea is to stay in Thailand for the ninety day with the extension.

When you come back you get another 60day. Unless you are denied entry

Thank you ! I thought it was only 30 days after a ‘border hop’ . I read this stuff all the time and I did not know . Thanks for the clarification 👍

When you re-enter from Vietnam you will receive a new 60 day stamp.

As Brandon says, your exempt entry ends when you go to Vietnam and if you return from Vietnam to Thailand you will be asking for a new exempt entry.

Thank you kindly for your response and correcting my terminology 👍. On a sidenote, I did the scenario in June and July and when returning to BKK the new stamp was for 60 days after my re-entry . I did not expect to see that .

so you already did TWO visa-exempt entries since the recent 3 months, in June and July, and the next one will be on October 1st, and another one will follow right away when re-entering in November, coming from Vietnam.. . . . .While it speaks for you that you didn't extend, i.e. maximized each "touristic" stay, and do not plan to maximize the planned two visa-exempts in October and November, I would not risk to get denied entry at the border, because an Immigration officer comes to the conclusion that you are misusing touristic entries for a longstay. Make sure you got the THREE famous proofs on you in case you will be pulled aside both in October and when returning from Vietnam - 20,000 THB or equivalent in cash, a few nights booked accomodation and proof of onward travel out of Thailand within the 60 days

Thank you Nongnuch. I always pay for my 60 days of hotels in advance, and I would do that if I stayed beyond my ‘original 60 days’ . And yes , I make a point of having cash on hand (for many reasons) . I would not extend my stay beyond 60 day without air reservations secured… I used the October 1 date just as an example because it’s so near . In reality I will be going to BKK on December 20, 2025 . Thank you for the good information 👍

What you are asking about is not an extension. You would get a brand new entry stamp if you leave Thailand and return.

An extension is something you apply for and pay for at your local immigration office.
