Will Immigration ask me for proof of 20,000 THB cash upon entering Thailand?

Is this possible at any border to Thailand, or are there borders, where the officials are super relaxed and never ever ask?

Actually, the answer is we can’t know.

Nobody can tell you for sure how a border official will act upon seeing your Thai stamp history in your passport and on his computer.

Immigration mainly will ask people who have an extensive travel history to Thailand stamped in their passport and who are taking advantage of the visa exemption scheme, by doing consecutive visa-exempt entries.

The border officials will take you aside and start asking questions when they suspect a visa abuse - an abuse of the visa-exempt scheme for a long-term stay.

The criteria, to which immigration will decide over an entry permit at the borders, are listed in the so-called “Section 12” of the Thai immigration police.

In addition, an immigration officer is allowed to decide upon his own discretion.

The presence of a visa does NOT entitle you to enter the country if the border official reaches the conclusion that you are violating an article of “Section 12”

Proof of cash is one of three instruments immigration will use to state an official reason for the refusal of entry.

They ask such “undesirable” people for the THREE famous proofs:

*** and proof of onward travel out of Thailand within the 30 days that you will be stamped in if you enter without a visa.

If Immigration actually asks you for proof of cash of a minimum of 20,000.- THB per person, it is better to have these funds on you.

The proof of cash is hidden in paragraph 2 of “SECTION 12”.

SECTION 12 is a set of immigration rules that lists 12 reasons for which a person may be denied entry into Thailand.

Paragraph two describes the reason for the refusal of entry: “Having no appropriate means of living following entrance into the Kingdom”

If “visa abuse” is suspected, the immigration officer will pull out the so-called “Section 12” rules in order to be able to present a reason for the rejection. And this reason is usually the lack of proof of cash.

You should be prepared and be able to show the three proofs, regardless with which visa you enter, or whether you enter without a visa, and also REGARDLESS which kind of land or airside border you are using. Fact is, the suspicion of visa-exempt misuse can pop up at ANY Thai border.
