On Wednesday I am going to be re-entering Thailand for the 5th time in a year on a Visa exempt entry, I understand there is no limit to this however I may be asked for 3 things at immigration..

Copy of rental Agreement

Proof of funds (20,000 THB)

Onward ticket

A couple of questions, firstly is that correct?

Is cash ok as proof of funds?

The onward ticket, can it be from anywhere in Thailand outbound or does it have to be near the port of arrival?

TIA

TLDR : Answer Summary
When re-entering Thailand on a visa-exempt entry, you may be asked to provide a copy of your rental agreement, proof of funds (20,000 THB in cash), and an onward ticket. Although the actual legal amount for proof of funds is 10,000 THB, it is commonly requested as 20,000 THB during entry. Cash is acceptable for proof of funds when entering, while bank statements will not suffice. The onward ticket can be from any departure point within Thailand, not necessarily near your port of arrival.

The rules are clear and known by the OP. Discussion of the rules are crazy rules and should be handled different on your statement about hours or days of stay, is a total different discussion and this is not the place for it. We are just guests in this country and we have no influence on their laws. Success to all.

Hello I am arriving in Don Mueang in July on a 2 day visit from Vietnam, I will have a return flight and a hotel booking, my question is will I still need

baht in cash? It seems quite a lot for such a short time in Thailand.

@Robert ******
they would know from the completed TM 6 as it would have length of stay showing 2 days and show onward flight number and date.

Excellent advice Robert.

It is already a rule for many years, if it is such a big problem for you, I suggest next time visit another country. There is nothing we can do to change the rules and laws. We have to follow them up if we want to be a guest in their country. Good luck.

But I will have a return flight ticket booked, I could understand if I was coming in on a one way ticket but aren't they just jumping to conclusions thinking I am trying to stay? I totally understand your sentiment about tourists ending up on the sidewalk but they are generally young people on their first visit to Thailand, I on the other hand am an older person who lived there previously. It is crazy and unsafe to force people to carry more cash than they need to.

You get stamped in for 30 days, extendable with another 30 days. You stay short time but how does Immigration Officer now the difference. You can't start making rules, by hours of staying, and believe all people will follow up what they say. Good guys suffer for all those bad guys.

I left Thailand in April, I had an ED visa for 1 year before I left and before that I had a non O volunteer visa for the previous year. I am now living in Vietnam but I need to leave to renew my visa which will take 1 day, I have my return flight and hotel booked and have no intention of staying in Thailand. It just seems crazy expecting someone travelling on such a short visit to be carrying such a sum of money.
Robert *******
Most of the time, only people with back to back tourist visa and multiple Visa Exempt entries in short time are being asked for these proofs, I understand it sounds like a crazy rule but on the other hand tourist ending up on the sidewalk selling their pictures for onward travel is something a country does not like.
Neil *******
Ok I was not planning to be travelling with that much cash. At the most I will need 5000 for my stay and I doubt I will spend that.
Robert *******
No, it could be in other currency.
Neil *******
Does it have to be in baht?
Neil *******
What a crazy country and crazy law, I will be in the country less than 40 hours, I have paid for my hotel already and they can still refuse me if I don't produce
*****
in cash 😤 madness!!!

More than 30 million arrivals a year, not everybody is asked to show. But If you are asked you need to show, otherwise problems get started.

Let's sort out how the proof of funds works

There are two instances where you could be asked for it.

One is at a thai consulate buying a visa for thailand. In that instance you show a bank account to meet the requirement. It can be a thai or foreign country account. You CANNOT show cash :/

The other instance when you can be asked for proof of funds is when you stamp into the country. In this instance it HAS to be in CASH. You cannot show a bank account. :/

Keep in mind you can be asked for proof of funds when entering on a visa exempt entry, a tourist visa or even a Non-Immigrant visa. You will NOT be asked for proof of funds on yearly extensions of stays.

The actual law is as
@Ll***
stated entering visa exempt it is 10K baht (or the equivalent) in cash. BUT when people are asked for proof of funds stamping into the country at both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports they are asked for 20K baht (or the equivalent).

It is really 10K baht for visa exempt or visa on arrival

20K baht for tourist or Non-Immigrant type visas

It can be from anywhere and you can show funds from your country then when you arrive you must go to immigration and do a TM 30 report you got a day or two to do this if your landlord doesn’t do it for you it’s a must now if you want to extend for an extra 30 days

@Lloyd *******
New law that there pushing if you don’t report in 24 hrs according to the law but Lady in Jomtien told me three days I watch people pay the fine as I have to register my girl every 90 days
Lloyd ********
@Bob *********
there is no 1600 Baht fine, and the offices that require and those that don't have been that way for a long time.
Bob **********
@Lloyd *******
yea it changes and if they refuse the 30 days you can pay 1600 Baht fine
Lloyd ********
That all depends on your local office, some don't care

Thanks, I get a 30 day stamp so I must have used the wrong term, visa exempt entry.
Lloyd ********
Proof of funds should be 10k for a visa exempt entry

I guess you mean you arrive using the Visa Exempt Entry, not a Visa on Arrival (this one you buy at the airport before Immigration). You can use an onward ticket from anywhere in Thailand outbound.
