Does my mom need a re-entry permit for her multiple-entry retirement visa in Thailand?

Hi everyone.

I am helping my mom with her visa situation in Thailand and was hoping people here have some insights. She just got a multiple-entry retirment visa ("O-A"). It is valid until 25 Nov 2022. She entered Thailand earlier this month and plans to leave again in a few months to go back to Europe. She wants to come back in October 2022.

(1) does she need to secure re-entry permit before leaving? If so how long does it take and what documents are required?

(2) when would she need to re-apply to extend her visa beyond Nov 2022 and what documents are required in practice.

Many thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion addresses the need for a re-entry permit for a multiple-entry retirement visa (O-A) in Thailand. It confirms that as long as the visa holder re-enters the country before the visa expiration date of November 25, 2022, a re-entry permit is not required. Instead, the holder will receive an extension for one year upon re-entry. The conversation also highlights the process for renewing the retirement visa and obtaining a re-entry stamp if the visa holder leaves Thailand after the visa's latest expiration but within the year.

Like Stuart said, as long as she enters by November 25 she gets stamped in for a year. Many people do a border run just before the expiration date to basically turn the OA into a 2-year visa since they get stamped in for a year every time they enter.

Note that if she leaves the country again after November 25 but still within the most recent 1 year stamp she received, THEN she would want to get a re-entry stamp.

The visa is multiple entry. You do not need a reentry permit. As long as she enters before Nov 25 2022, she’ll be stamped in for a year or as long as she has insurance for.

These are the documents needed in Phuket. Her local office may differ slightly.
