I need help with Insurance and airline clarification please….My husband and I planned on moving to Thailand for retirement this Summer. We’ll enter on 90 days Non-O visa single entry with US passports. We are both over 50 and fully vaccinated. We will apply for 1 year Visa extension towards the middle of third months.

Questions: Do we have to purchase both of the regular health insurance with min coverage of 40k/400k thb policy AND $50k usd Covid coverage for 90 days? Can we only purchased one way airline tickets to Thailand and purchased forward tickets for return flights? The forward tickets will be used for visa returning dates and insurance applications or airline retirement.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When moving to Thailand on a 90-day Non-O visa, you are required to have both regular health insurance with a minimum coverage of 40,000/400,000 THB and Covid-19 insurance with at least $50,000 USD coverage for the duration of your initial stay. As for flights, it is permissible to purchase one-way tickets; however, having confirmed onward travel (for visa purposes) is recommended, as it may be required by immigration.

Refunds won't be 50% of the fare. I just bought a single to Phnom Penh. They only need a ticket out, not a return.

When we applied for the Non O, the Vancouver Consulate told us we need the covid insurance and the 40k/400k for the original 90 days. We were not asked for it when we did our extension. For various reasons, we didn't want to be without insurance so got a policy that will cover our expected time here. I'd ask the embassy or consulate where you are applying as there maybe different requirements.

We flew one way but booked a fully refundable return ticket for the 90 day time line. I was asked for it by immigration when we originally entered Thailand, my husband wasn't.

Thank you for your reply. It confirmed what I read on Thai Consulate in DC website regarding to insurance requirements. We will get a health insurance for our expected time in Thailand as well.

Which airline has fully refundable return ticket for the 90 days time line?

Air Canada had a promotion when we booked, anything booked prior to a certain date was refundable. Personally, I try not to fly with them because they are horrible but fully refundable was a nice to have.

Good to know.

Which insurance company did you decided to go with for the 90 days and for the expected time there?

@Pom *******
we went with AXA Sawadee. The main reason being the covid coverage including asymptomatic hospitalizations. Our Canadian one didn't cover it as not medically necessary so we would have had to get 2 policies to cover everything. The AXA Sawadee is decent and worked out about the same price wise. Plus it's direct bill if you go to a hospital in thier group.

hello Helen. Did Thai Immigrant asked for marriage License when you apply for one year extension?
Helen ********
@Pom *******
yes because I applied as a "trailing spouse", not sure if that's the correct term. We are both Canadian, and were married in Canada. Because we are Canadian we can get a letter from the consulate to verify funds and they verified our marriage. We gave a copy of the letter to immigration plus a copy of the wedding certificate. The lady checking our documents questioned why it wasn't translated we said we weren't told it had to be and the letter verified it. She spoke to someone else who told her to accept it.
