Hi guys, any of you know if I can fly to Thailand on a one way ticket with a 60d tourist visa or is it required to have return ticket these days? another question would be regarding insurance covering COVID up to $100.000 - found these two insurances: Tune Protect and AXA (around 3000-4000 THB for 1 month cover). Do I need to be covered for the entire stay in order to be allowed in the country? Thanks šŸ˜Š

TLDR : Answer Summary
Travelers to Thailand with a 60-day tourist visa might face uncertainties regarding flying on a one-way ticket. Responses suggest that while Thai immigration typically does not enforce a return ticket requirement, airlines may ask for proof of onward travel. It's advisable for travelers to check with their airline before departure. Regarding COVID-19 insurance, travelers are generally required to have insurance covering the entire duration of their stay. Several participants highlighted the need for the insurance to be verified at both the visa application stage and when obtaining a Certificate of Entry (COE). Overall, booking return or onward travel and ensuring adequate insurance coverage are recommended.

If you've had 2 covid jabs surely the insurance is cheaper ?

David Bramble. There's no reduction for the covid insurance. It's still 50-50 whether someone tests positive and gets put into a field hospital for two weeks. That's what the insurance is for.

It's not "return flight" but rather 'onward travel'. The big difference is with onward travel you only need to show evidence of intention of leaving Thailand. When I came here from the USA the airline was an either/or deal. Have visa or onward travel.

Although it may not be on option now, I have always used bus tickets. Buy the bus ticket online print the the ticket and show that to anybody who asks (usually people at embassy when applying for visa)

Another option would be to come with no evidence of intention of onward travels. If you get stopped you can purchase a cheap ticket to anywhere. A quick google search show 1 way ticket to Singapore $60/USD.

Of course you will want to allow plenty of time at check-in to Thailand incase you need to make last minute arrangements.

thanks. That is helpful. You booked bus to where? (just curious)

A flight to Singapore might be a great idea actually. Thinking I'll do that. Embassy needs return or onward ticket in order to get the COE.

Any bus out of the country will do.

It could be Nong Khai - Vientianne. 30 tbh fare or something like that.

All land borders are closed though, so currently not an option for you.

yes one way ticket. 3 times with no issues or questions

These are pre-corvid solutions. Now? Different story because of the various new requirements by immigration. I'd research the situation carefully before going ahead with this - which doesn't include fb comments!

In theory you need 'onward travel'. It's rarely asked for by Thai Immigration but you may have some problems boarding your flight with out a return or onward travel within the validity of the visa, depending on the airline.

thanks šŸ™ someone here suggested booking two one way tickets instead of a return ticket and then cancel the latter. Or just don't take the return flight as the difference of price from one way and return flights is not that much usually.
Steve *******
@Helio ****
Much cheaper to book a return and junk that if you dont use it. A return is way cheaper than 2 one-ways.

Definitely. You're right. Makes sense. Someone also else said that an onward ticket is fine. Flight to Singapore for $60 ... That could be an option

Helio *****

@Peter *******
that's also a good idea to buy 2 ways!! not sure if you can cancel and get the money back though. Probably depends on the airline

@Helio ****

you can change the return date for later I guess?
Kool *******
You must have covid-19 insurance for as long as your visa is. In your case at least 60 days, whether you stay that long or not.

@Kool ******
I also needed to present my entire ticket (2ways) booking to the embassy before getting a 60days tr visa btw

check with your local embassy. Mine is from Singapore and they are pretty strict with the return ticket policy. My airline was too but luckily I had Ed visa back then so it took a lot of convincing before they allowed me to check in

@Mindy ******
thanks for sharing. I already checked with them now and they said to get COE you need a return flight ticket. Ofc the return ticket can always be changed or not taken. This is how it is at the moment in Germany in case anyone else is wondering.
Mindy *******
@Helio ****
yup I got a return ticket but planning to change it as soon as I get an extension šŸ¤£ luckily airlines are pretty flexible now (SIA)

do you know if return ticket is necessary to get in the country these days? and how easy is it to get 30 day extension now?
Kool *******
@Helio ****
the 30 day extension is the same as before covid-19, very easy. As far as a return ticket, most of the time it is required, but not always.
Helio *****

@Kool ******
great. Spoke to Etihad Airways and they said there is no restriction at the moment to book return flight.. does it depend on the airline or?
Kool *******
@Helio ****
a big thing is if the Thai embassy issues you your certificate of entry without a return flight.
Helio *****

@Kool ******
thank you, you have been very helpful Sir. Just have to clarify that point with the embassy then. One last question please. Do you know if they ask for the COVID covered insurance while issuing the COE or can I do that later?
Mindy *******
@Helio ****
insurance have to be presented while applying for visa and also COE
Helio *****

@Kool ******
good point... might as well not risk it and get the return flight and not take it

Flip a coin. Some have no issues, some get stopped at the checking in desk. Immigration donā€™t care, but your airline may insist you have a return or at least onward flight. Check with them first to make sure. Iā€™ll let others with recent experience regards insurance requirements answer the second part of your question.

Book through expedia us website the day before and pick a 'free 24hr cancellation' flight. Cancel after you board.

@Rogerio *****
Good tip:) but can't risk buying the day before..
Rogerio ******
@Helio ****
you buy it the day before, you go through immigration so if they ask for it, you're covered, then you cancel it. You can literally buy anything at any price, because you'll be cancelling it.

you talking about the return ticket right?
