TLDR : Answer Summary
The recent inquiries about financial proof requirements for visas in Thailand show some confusion around how these apply, particularly regarding the DTV (Digital Nomad Visa) and tourist visas (TR). While the DTV already has a requirement of 500,000 baht in financial proof, the tourist visa has reinstated a 20,000 baht cash requirement for entry, which some users noted has been an ongoing regulation but wasn't enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Comments reflect mixed feelings on these requirements, with some suggesting they are reasonable, while others feel they create unnecessary barriers for travelers.

DTV already has a financial proof requirement, a much much higher one

Try and get a Shengen visa then you will start complaining about requirements 🤣

This has always been in place, and could be asked for at anytime! In fact, most countries in the world have this rule when crossing an international border. Its up to them to enforce it or not, thats all.😁

That's actually a different rule again, where anyone on tourist or exemption have to show 20k, in actual cash (bank statement, app showing cash in account not valid) only time its ever 'enforced' here is when immigration have already decided not letting you in and just looking for the excuse that requires least amount of explaining on their forms...actually over the years been many accounts of people having that cash on them but that's what IO puts on form anyway

I seem to remember having to show a bank statement with at least $1500 when applying for a tourist visa pre-covid, at least when applying in the US. Proving you have $600 is peanuts.
James *******
They should increase it 100k. Would weed out a lot of the dregs tourists

Honestly, if someone can't show 20k baht for any type of visa or visa-exempt, the only place they should be traveling to is work.

Many people have savings in crypto or shares, and Thailand does not accept these assets as proof wealthy (yet), that's the problem. Who wants to have 500K/800K sleeping in a bank today ?
Emile ******
Anonymous participant 886 that is fine, if the majority of your funds are tied in crypto or shares. But unfortunately, can't pay a hospital, accommodation or food in crypto or shares, so yes, having cash in hand or within immediate access via an atm still is preferred. And i know, e-wallets you can transfer quickly back to your bank, but you need to think outside your immediate circle.

What if the grid goes down, no power, no wifi/4g/5g, how will you access those assets then? What if the stock market suddenly plunges, or your crypto gets rugpulled. Not saying the chance is high, but there is a reason you still get warnings when investing.

Also, the discussion is about 20k baht. That's like 500 euros. Personally, living in thailand, i always have that amount in my wallet. I don't know when i might end up in a rural village with no atm or 7-Eleven. Additionally, i have euros and baht to the sum of about 2000 euros in my safe at home. Unlike in Europe/the western world, cash is still king in many of ASEAN and we need to adapt, and not try and bring our western mentality with us.

you can pay hotels and flights in crypto no problem, you can even pay 650k for an elite visa with bitcoin

i'm not doubting that it is possible, but i would like to see someone go to Nong Bua Lum Phu or Khanom and try to book a room in a little resort with their crypto wallet.

This is the issue nowadays, and goes back to what i said before. We're all focused on our perception that we forget about the perspective. Just because something is possible in your world, doesn't mean it is the norm all over.

So instead of trying to bring your (not you specifically) world with you when you travel, adapt to the world you are traveling to.

@Emile *****
challenge accepted, Pialo resort in Nong Bua Lum Phu you can pay with crypto 🙂

Anonymous participant 886 it’s a sensible number if someone loses income or has a medical emergency it’s a good rainy day fund. For expats the mindset needs to be more advanced than for those living in their home country.

and there’s a lot to the reason why they want it

If it is the 20k THB for visitors etc they have been in place for years. Rarely asked for.
Anonymous ******************
No, its new thing on tourist visas (TR), have to show financial proof now (they keep saying reimplementing an old rule, but cannot remember TRs having financial proof reqs in last decade at least). As most visa applications online now they will basicly have to upload a bank statement now for TR. But unless the lower exemptions back down TR is pretty useless for majority of nationalitys anyway
Chris *********
Anonymous participant 985 that's not true many airlines especially flying from Vietnam require you to have 20k cash or equivalent to fly, immigration has had this for years
Anonymous ******************
@Chris ********
That's a different rule, and its cash or traveler's checks only, no equivalent such as bank statement or showing balance on banking app. Only time it comes up is when IO already decided not letting you in and just looking for simple excuse to deny. They won't even let you go to the ATM to pull it out
Chris *********
Anonymous participant 985 I still see it as the same thing, even if you need to produce a statement when you apply for a visa, when you arrive in the country you still need 20k cash in hand anyway or you could still be denied entry. Yes it's a new requirement but still when you arrive you'll still need the 20k in hand anyway.
Greg ********
@Chris ********
It's not new though. Pre Covid you had to show money for a TR visa. It just stopped during Covid and is being reinstated again
Anonymous ******************
@Chris ********
Technically you need 20k in hand, but in reality, very unlikely to get asked, but if you do get asked, got less than 1% chance of getting in anyway because if they are asking they already decided they are not letting you in and just looking for simple reason to put on form. Where with this new rule, EVERY TR application will have to show financial proof.

But really, its just cosmetic change anyway, by nationality only tiny selection of people, mainly from africa, need a TR as most have exempt now and that gives same amount.

Outside of them its just the "you have been here to long, next time get proper visa" crowd, most of whom should be moving to DTV anyway
Chris *********
Anonymous participant 985 yeah totally agree with you
Greg ********
Anonymous participant 985 I just saw that. Yeah show 20k for a TR. Report said they used to do it but stopped during Covid. I remember back on 2017 and 2018 I had to show money when getting TR in Cambodia for Thailand

I mean 20 000 bath everyone should be able to show?
Jay *****
Are people really worried about having 20,000 baht proof of funds?
AllSabaai ******
@Jay ****
thank you for stating this point.

If you don't have 20,000 THB which is around 600 $

What are you coming to do here then !!

Eat and run same many recently were doing. Or sleep.on the beach same others are doing in Pattaya

Or break the charity box from temple and take the money from it because you need to buy food

Or stealing from the tips box at a café !!!

All that recently happened
Paul *******
The DTV already has a 500K financial requirement. Tourist visas have now had the 20K requirement reimposed.

@Rowan ********
if the OP was referring to that, then this has nothing to do with the DTV, I mean, each visa has different requirements, for the DTV you need to show 500,000B, and then it's good for 5 years.
Marb ********
@Rowan ********
even if this were true, the requirement is $500.. if you don’t have $500 you shouldn’t be travelling in the first place haha
Rowan *********
@Marb *******
I agree, 20k is nothing. In fact, I think the requirement should be higher
