TLDR : Answer Summary
A South African inquired whether they must return to South Africa to change their Non-O visa to a Non-B visa. A comment clarified that while returning to South Africa is not necessary, it's essential to find a Thai consulate that issues visas to South African passport holders, with certain locations being more accommodating than others.

You don't necessarily have to go back to South Africa BUT you do need to find a thai consulate that will issue visas to S/A passport holders.
Kuala Lumpur won't, Penang I'm not sure, Vientiane is okay I believe.
Hopefully someone will weigh in

Vientiane and Penang are OK for SA nationals, based on our HR staff calling the embassies recently to ask. However no experience of actually getting the visa there yet.
